matt5791
I think my 2 year old daughter went and tried to stop the screen rising out of the dash when she saw it appearing - I left her in the front while I was doing something in the back of the car - I think she pressed the volume button and saw the screen coming out of the dash and tried to stop it or something. Now, all is OK until the screen reaches the vertical position- then click, click, click, click - like the motor is continuing to run when it doesn't need to. If it wasn't for the noise everything would appear fine. It retracts absolutely normally. Does anyone have any ideas how to re-set it - as that would appear to be what it needs. Any help gratefully received.
PsYcHe
Could be that she's stripped one of the cogs partially, or caused it to pop out of alignment. See if you can spot anything in there that's not quite right. The units are prone to breaking some of the cogs by themselves anyway.
MichaelV8V
It looks like bad news I'm afraid. The clicking means that the cogs are wrecked, and the recommended cure is a whole new lift mechanism, which is about £250-£300 from your main dealer. I fitted my new one, but it took me half a day, being ultra careful. Most of the dash has to come off to fit the new mechanism. An independent Audi specialist should be able to fit it for about £100. If you're very handy, there there was someone selling brass replacement cogs on ebay, but I don't know of anyone that has tried that route. 54m
It's not the little one it's a fault! Haha...This is a known fault in the D3 Audi A8's. A few months back mine started doing the exact same thing though somthing was catching till is constantly did it upon start up. Audi Replaced the item at fault free of charge through warranty. Swiftys A8
hi, my 2005 A8s screen gave up awhile ago (small plastic cog, tooth missing) i got hold of a brass relacement off E'bay. fitted it myself. its straight forward if you are confident messing with the dash etc, took me about 4 hrs in all and at that point didnt know that much about the car their are 2 small micro switches aswell to stop it chewing all the cogs away.
