Mitchet
Just wondering if anyone has Kumho Ecsta Spt tyres on their A8 D3 (235/55/17)? I currently have one on each corner (though the fronts and rears were fitted around 6 months apart, fronts first), and after 12k miles on the front tyres, the outer edge is worn down to practically nothing. Tread on the rest of the tyre is okay (around 3mm now). This is the same on both front tyres, but more noticeable on the NS. Took it to Kwik-Fit today for a 4 wheel tracking check, but they reported no issues and blamed the uneven wear on having 'budget' tyres?! At £120 per tyre, I wouldn't call them budget... maybe mid range. Besides, they are the correct load rating for the car (103). He also said that tyre depths on Quattro's should be no more than 2mm apart or it can screw up the Quattro system?? Is there anything else that could cause this? In particular, worn bushes on the suspension or anti-roll bar? The only reason I mention it, is that I'm hearing a few odd knocking sounds, especially when going over rough ground or braking reasonably heavy. The noise is coming from the NSF. Tipex
Knocking is probably drop links, tyres on the front will wear on the outside first, particularly the NSF as we have far to many roundabouts in this country. You can help counter it by raising the tyre pressures slightly, but I wouldn't be expecting much more than 12k on the fronts to be honest.
snapdragon
I have had this on all tyres on the D3 and i have the same size as you. Michelin Pilot ??? & Pirelli PZero Nero. Due to high cost for lifespan, I bought Nexen N8000 this time from pneus-nline, very pleased with them, better than both the predecesors in every way apart from wear comapred to the Michelins. For £85+£15 fitting, but I fear they are going the same way. I just put it down to it being a large but nimble car with comfort-oriented sized wheels. The only people who can align it properly are VW Phaeton, Bentley and Audi dealers, as they have a special machine to do the S-curve, but the others are better than nothing. JulianHicks
I'm a 'fan' of Kumho and I've had two and a half sets of the ECSTA tyres on in the [almost] five years I've had my 3.0TDI D3. I found my tyres were getting scrubbed recently but had the four-wheel alignment redone 'properly' on my local [non Audi] dealer's 'Hofmann' alignment rig in Ashford, Kent. Alignment was out in various ways [probably pot hole based] and wear is now back to normal [for Quattros, at least] on the replacement 'all round' set of Kumhos I got shortly afterwards. JuianG
How many miles on the clock and what if any suspension changes have been made ? Track rod ends drop links and control arms need to be checked. Any play in the wheels when jacked off the ground up and down or side to side ?
