Tipex
Not exactly a glowing review that is it, comparing it to white goods, a microwave! Basically, it's really really fast in a straight line, if you don't like driving, but just want to brag about how fast your car is, this is for you. Scotty
And this comes back to the age old question and differentiator : Get there quickly with little effort in an Audi Get there after having more fun in a BMW What's best? Depends what you want. If the car can whiz you along in all conditions and get you from A to B fast then then it must be very good at being a car If you want something that is more challenging and involving then it's not so good. I think we've been here before!

I think we've been here before! Thing is, the Audi loses this argument, in a big way.Any car, be it a Golf GTi, a BMW 'M' or anything sporty, will get you where you want to go quickly and without fuss, it's just that the BMW (and some others of course) will be an entertaining and rewarding drive too, if you want them to be. The Audi is a one trick pony, fast in a straight line, deeply unrewarding to drive, and ultimately it won't get you where you want to go any quicker that any of the others, as you can't use the full potential of any of them on the road unless you are a huge tw*t. As they say in the video, it's so dull to drive you wouldn't even want to take one on track, and that's the only place you'll ever get to use any of that performance. It's a p*ssing contest car, nothing more and it's a shame, the pointless pursuit of having the 'most BHP' has really got quite boring, I wish they'd focus on making cars more fun. I watched a video (think it was on /Drive) recently, about an American car, it didn't have the biggest engine, the biggest brakes, it wasn't the fastest, it wasn't the best handling, but the whole package worked, it didn't need a million horsepower, it was perfectly adequate, being adequate made the car what it was, bloody good fun. CarMad
My A6 didn't understand corners they just happened, it was like it said I think that was a corner sorry I wasn't taught about it in school. The 5 GT even though its far bigger gives you the communication to tell you that you only used 72% of what the car can do push harder next time. Even though obviously the BMW is RWD it gives me far more confidence to push on that the Audi did and is more fun and no I don't get the back end out in it, can you imagine doing that in a 5 GT. People find it strange enough from the front and the back let alone drift around the corner. That all being said I really enjoyed the A3 2.0T I had but the 330i that replaced it was in a different league for handling.
Tipex
I find getting the back end out much easier in bigger cars, you get more time to catch it than in something with a short wheelbase. Not that I do it very often (hardly ever) but I did get the back end of our Merc E300 BluTech hybrid out on a wet roundabout in the early hours on my way back from Heathrow the other night. Tipex
Sorry, I thought this was Tyresmoke, I must have posted in mumsnet by mistake, opps! Well the RS3 is perfect for school run mums wanting to show off, but not being able to drive for toffee! I'm assuming from that comment therefore, that you don't want cars to be fun to drive, just really fast in a straight line so you can win the p*ssing contest, in which case you are Audi's perfect customer.

garcon magnifique
Now then children. There are some in the class who, for whatever reason, worship Audis. It might mean that makes them appear a bit different to the rest of us, it may mean that some of the things they say and do seem a bit strange, but that's no reason to bully them. Now run along and play nicely. Edited June 20, 2015 by garcon magnifique

I haven't driven the RS3 yet, but when I drove the S3, I couldn't help think it was like the best bits of my S4 and 205 in one car. I drove it back to back with the RS4, but the S3 was the one I came away thinking about days later. Was a manual Sportback - the 5dr seems to handle better than the 3dr, possibly the longer wheelbase car has very slightly stiffer rear suspension which helps cornering. Very impressed, and certainly bodes well for the RS Audi were brave doing the UK media launch at Shelsley Walsh, certainly shows confidence in your products handling. I shall refrain from linking any more videos...

garcon magnifique
Going from what EVO magazine have said so far, and I realise one's own subjective experience is always better than reading what motoring journos have to say, from a starting point of absolutely slating the previous RS3 for all the reasons already covered, they are quite positive about the new one based on the experience they've had with it so far. It certainly seems to be an improvement in terms of handling and anyone with petrol in their veins has to agree it's a pretty stonking engine. It's funny that how important it is that a car sounds good is one of those completely illogical factors that go towards making an enthusiast's car. Important enough to spec the sports exhaust just for the noise. In the end it's a subjective thing. Nobody is going to buy an RS3 because all its factors add up to being the best performance car for the money - in fact anyone who approaches it that way is liable to end up saving themselves ten grand and sacrificing a bit of straight line grunt by choosing a Golf R instead. But that's not how you buy a performance car. As an aside, looking at various new and speculative VAG models, you know what intrigues me more than an RS3 or a Golf R 400? A Polo R. Rally pedigree and usable performance.
Ian_C
No Jim. I'd quite like a blast in a 135 though! G, I agree, the engine and exhaust note are a massive factor buying something that's *not* a 2.0 TDI to mile munch! The reason why the current S4 leaves me a little cold compared to 'my' S4. Even the S3 (or Golf R) sound better! Edited June 20, 2015 by Ian_C
NewNiceMrMe
I don't have any problem at all with you linking Audi video's, Ian. It is a free forum after all and you are the biggest fan of Audi on it, by a mile, so I would expect it. My comment had an element of tongue-in-cheek to it but, and it is a but, I do sometimes think it'd be nice if your knowledge of cars was used to push content on other brands, or to acknowledge some of the faults of Audi etc. I enjoy BMW's but was even banned by them on a social media platform because of how much I complained about one particular car (boring again, won't go there). I love the older RS4's and RS6's. There is something very classy about them. I've never hidden that. I don't particularly like the new M3's or M4's. They're very fast, undoubtedly, but I preferred the V8 and the previous generation (and the non-electric steering). I had a bit of a controversial pop at the V8 M5 for being muted. I still think it is. My point is that I would never want to see you stop posting content - I just sometimes think it is a shame it isn't a little more balanced. Each to their own though and you certainly shouldn't listen to me (I wouldn't expect you to). Just an opinion, and we're all entitled to them. p.s. I've edited this because your comment about the S4 'cold' feeling is actually the first time I've really seen you criticise the brand so I felt it only fair to say I'd seen it. He's already got his name down on another Golf! I'm not joking either. He's never seen it, but he's ordered it. He's a star. I wouldn't be without his Golf addiction updates. Whenever there is a boring news day, you can be assured Riz will brighten it up by announcing he's the first person in the UK to order a car that only exists on paper. I mean that too. I find it hugely entertaining and he knows my comments are in jest.
