max_b
Me again! The Mrs is planning a long weekend (4 nights) to NYC in June. Any recommendations for hotels that are central, nice and don't cost a fortune? Happy to consider any boutique type places. Cheers Max

Pincher
I probably wouldn't bother staying too close to Times Square - it's horrifically busy, all the time and isn't actually that nice a place. Try looking a little further north up by Central Park or down by Soho. Just remember that unless you really are paying top dollar (if you'll excuse the pun), then your room will be fairly small - that seems to be the way it is in NYC. You could look for an AirBnB but I'm not sure that they are licensed/insured over there? Don't quote me on that but I'm sure I read something about it fairly recently. It's an awesome place - I'd suggest staying an extra couple of days and head out to the mountains in NJ - you could even visit Orange County Choppers Edited April 28, 2016 by Pincher
Busby
Nice one Max I'd agree that really close to Times Square would be a bad move! The Lexington isn't a bad hotel - it's on Lexington Ave and E.47th. Back in the day we used to stay there with VA but it's had a full refurb since then and is quite modern now. Rooms aren't huge but that's NY and it's in a great place for wandering as it's an easy walk to Broadway/Times Square and Central Park/5th Ave. The Viceory is really nice too although you need to get a good price on one of the booking sites to make it not sting so much! Mrs Buzz has stayed in some boutique type places in Greenwich and also booked an apartment there once with her mates. I'll ask her if either were decent as I don't really listen when she comes home and tells me!!
burble
I probably wouldn't bother staying too close to Times Square - it's horrifically busy, all the time and isn't actually that nice a place. Agreed entirely. I've had the misfortune of staying on Times Square once and hated it. The hotel was fine but I really disliked walking out of the hotel first thing in the morning into the hustle and bustle of Times Square. I found it put me in the wrong mood for enjoying the rest of the day. The public transport is very good so you can get just about everywhere nice and quickly so there's no need to stay somewhere slap bang in the middle. Last time I was there I stayed on the Upper West Side at Beacon Hotel which was great. Room was nice and big (you won't be saying that if you stay on Times Square) and it was a couple of blocks from the subway or about 15-20 minutes walk to Times Square. My other half went last year with a friend and booked a place through AirBnB in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and was really happy with it.
max_b
I shall be following this thread with interest, then printing it off and leaving it somewhere Mrs T will find it in time for my next birthday! It's for a certain notable birthday the Mrs wants to take me! I've been lots of places but not NYC before. She's been a few times and is suggesting to stay central mainly for the 'authentic' NYC experience.I understand you guys saying don't stay too central but I think it's one of those things I need to experience, so when I go next time I can then say, don't stay central!! I'll get some of the hotels names I've looked up later on Edited April 29, 2016 by max_b
max_b
Time to update this, now we are back from a very enjoyable weekend in NY. We considered a few different places to stay including a couple of AirBnB options but in the end we went for the Marmara Park Avenue Hotel, situated between Lexington and Park Avenue on 32nd street. It wasn't the cheapest but perfect for the two of us. We had a Deluxe Room with a Terrace which was spacious, clean and well equipped - coffee/kettle/fridge, wifi, massive tv, etc. The hotel is still quite new and is very much trying to build its customer base, the staff could not have done more for us - excellent service. The icing on the cake had to be the private swimming pool and Turkisk Hammam, a great way to relax out after all the sight seeing you end up doing. With a subway line at the end of the street, it's a 5 out of 5 from us and wholly recommended for anybody wanting a recommendation for a NY hotel. Thanks to all who offered suggestions.
