siheron
We have just found out my brothers 1996 1.8 a4 avant has a 1.8 V5 engine..... The trouble is it's gutless at low rpm, even thought it's been checked at a dealership and they say it's ok. What can be done to improve performance,I'm quite new to the V5. Thanks. Scotty
You'll probably find that it's actually a normal four cyclinder engine and not a V5. The confusion can be caused as each of the four cylinders actually has 5 valves (2 in, 3 exhaust). With regards increasing performance, I'm not sure if anyone has done anything for non-turbo equipped 1.8 engines.
lmmlmmam
[ QUOTE ] each of the four cylinders actually has 5 valves (2 in, 3 exhaust). [/ QUOTE ] I think it's 3 Inlet valves and 2 Exhaust.

[/ QUOTE ] As above it might not be a V5, but if it is a standard normally aspirated 1.8, performance gains will be minimal but done through the usual avenues, start with a performance exhaust and induction filter kit, possibly mate these with a chip upgrade, these combined would hopefully give you about 10-15bhp improvement, it you want more you would be cheaper to look at an engine swap than a turbo or supercharger upgrade, better still trade the car for a similar age 1.8t sport. Ari
Like everyone else I'd say you have a four cylinder 1.8, but with five valves per cylinder, they designate this engine a 5V on the engine cover. Have a look in our tuning forum, I'm sure you'll find lots of useful help and information there. Tuning Forum
