I have a 1990 Golf GTi 8v engine code PB. Just recently it has been cutting out whilst driving normally. The power just goes away and no lights on the dash. When the clutch is depressed the rev's fall off and the ignition light's come on and the cars coasts to a stop. <font color="blue"> </font> <font color="blue"> </font> The car fails to start straight away but if after 30-60 seconds passes the car starts fine and runs ok for between 1 and 2 hours. This fault has happened 4 times always on long journeys and at different speeds. It has gone as long as 2.5 hours without happening and as little as 50 minutes before showing up again. I haves changed the distributor cap, rotor arm, spark plug's and coil but no joy??? Been to VW and they don't know.... Can anyone please help

ive seen this fault on a lot of golfs, and i think you will find if you change the ecu relay ( black with a 53 on it)to a new relay from vw that is white, 53. your problems will be over, the fault is that when the relay is in use it cant dissapate the heat and open circuts. then cools enough to opp and the car goes again.hence the color change of the relay. good luck.. jump.gif

Thanks Tobes will try to get hold of one of those and try it... She cuts out anything from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours of driving, just complete loss of power with no indications or lights until you drop the clutch and then the ignition lights come on. Then just pull over wait 30 seconds and off she goes again, can be quite scary when your driving down a country lane at 60 with my little girl in the back... not nice at all with nowhere to pull over... ices_blah.gif

I have a 1997 Mk3 8v and i am having the same trouble. I have had heard of others having the same problem, i have put some of the common problems on my website, http://ajmerphull.com/vw/vw.html

I have changed the Engine Management Relay (#30 on mine) which is located in slot 3, top row of the fuse box. Costs about £10 from dealer.

I have also been advised to change the fuel relay (~£20 from dealer), which i have purchased, but not changed yet, cuz i wanted to make sure it wasn't #30. I have checked the ignition switch, it doesn't seem to be faulty.

I suppose i will change the relay as a matter of course. My cousins Mk3 1.8i also suffered with similar problem and he found the coil to be knackered, which he changed with a second hand part (£40) and it has solved the problem, £100+ from dealer.
