ScapingCracking Noise when pulling away

Hi,

Any thoughts on this particular problem?

10 day old 1.8T Ltd Edition that makes a scraping cracking noise when pulling away. It sounds very much like the noise you hear when you scrape bellypans on high speedbumps on kerbs but it isn't that and nothing is hanging from the car. It only makes the noise the first time you pull away from cold and then it won't make it again until the next first pull away from cold. It happens in both first or reverse gear, whichever you happen to first engage in the morning. Also, it always happens at about the same time as the cluth is about 2/3 released.

Any ideas? Clutch isn't slipping but it sure sounds like a drivetrain problem. Or maybe could it be a starter motor issue? It only happens once, the first time after the car has been started.

I am sendig the car back to get it sorted but if anybody else has experienced the same, I'd like to know what it is.

Thanks

I get this every time when I move away in 1st. If I have reversed first then there is no problem but when it happens it feels like a slight knocking from under the engine compartment. Haven't worried about it particularly - just thought it was a "feature" of the car... confused.gif

Mine does that too. Figured it was a characteristic of the multitronic box.

Let us know what happens at the dealer.

Sound like the brakes are ceasing up a bit and scrapping on the disks when you pull away initially. Or as I have had before a stone (gravel drive) is stuck in the brake and scratching on the disk. You may want to try reversing at speed hitting the brakes and then going straight forward and hitting the brakes, this freed it for me. If it is a stone you do not want to do any miliage as it can damage the disk permenately.

My 1.8t limited edition also does this. I actually think it's something to do with the climate control compressor. The same used to happen on the climate control on my Alfa and on my Leon Cupra. Certainly don't think it's anything to worry about but let me know if the dealer finds anything more sinister. cheers ! beerchug.gif

I would tend to think Homer's analysis fits the sound I think being described. I get this if I wash the car without bypassing the water softener for the hose pipe - basically I think rust forms on the discs and bond them to the pads. If you leave it overnight like this you get a noise as the 'bond' is broken. Bypass the softener, take the car for a drive after washing to dry the brakes and it doesnt happen anymore...

Thanks but it is unlikely to be the brakes. I am a 1000 mile a week man, and this noise happens everytime you first start the car and pull away. Even if you turn off for 30 seconds, re-start engine and pull away, it will still do it.

If you leave engine running, it will do it at the first pull off but no more.

Thanks for your help so far.

I remember seeing a post just after I got my car 12 months ago discussing a similar noise when pulling away. As I have had two racks I know it is'nt this grin.gif

The post described something about the ABS system doing some sort of mechanical self check / reset just after you pull away. The noise sounds / feels as though it is coming from the bottom of the steering column on the driver's side.

Mines a CVT and does it every time, I think it is just a characteristic of the car, but could be wrong. Would be interested to hear what your dealer says.

Ah, thought it only did it from cold, unlikely to be the brakes sticking if it does it after you've been driving already.

^^^^^Think the guys above have got the answer anyhows !

Turned out to be a golf ball that had wormed its way our of the bag.....

Think there's a moral to this story!
