I have Orange K700i and a laptop due in the next few days.

probably will set them up to use bluetooth...

So whats the cheapest way to allow the odd connection to the internet as and when i am on the move with this phone.

the odd email, and browsing the net

is it GPRS???? ***

can i dial into a isp with that??? ie something like a pay per min freeserve account (purely just to log in online)

*** thought GPRS was all about what MB you download, not how long your online, hence why im not sure !

as i have tried a dabble at the free "TRY" GPRS with the handset only and and it is very sluggish, even requesting simple things, like a search, or an orange menu item,

as far as i can see i am using the GPRS and GSM as default connection, (the only other is GSM only)

I may have a chat with support to check im using right settings.

how would i know if i am on GPRS or not?

some guidance would be appreciated

Thanks beerchug.gif

grin.gif Orange GPRS is pretty reliable and without a specific subscription costs £3 per mb (£10 /mb if roaming)

Orange data (CSD data call) need to be enabled from customer services and you are charged per min. As its Orange you have the option of HSCSD (high speed CSD) but its like paying for 2 phone calls. not worth it IMO unless you need a very steady bandwidth for something.

To check if you have GPRS enabled , you should be able to launch the phones WAP browser but change the browser settings to the GPRS profiles instead of the CSD one. Just see if you can connect or not.

Personally I'd always go for GPRS - you don't have to keep connecting and disconnecting to avoid wasting money and on the whole its quicker.

With the PC - look in the bluetooth neighbourhood with the phone after you've paired the devices and get the available services. One should be "Dialup Networking" - select this, leave the username and password blank and in the dialing number enter :

*99***1#

then click dial - you should then end up connected. Lauch IE and browse at your leisure....

p.s Most phones have an Icon to let you know if you are in GPRS or CSD mode - but if you don't see a dialing info appear then its GPRS

The Orange 3G thing is pretty good - had a go with it yesterday. Only for corporates at the mo I think.

Details here

Coverage is still patchy, but speed was good. They do an unlimited tariff (1Gb fair use) @ £75 quid a month and the card is free then.

One tip - force any of thses things into 3G only as otherwise they drop to GPRS, which takes 20 seconds or so, but don't dynamically go back to 3G.

Almost a replacement for wired BB. Truoble is, our users that are out of BB coverage are lucky to get a mobile signal at all, let alone GPRS or 3G smashfreakB.gif

grin.gif glad to be of assistance 169144-ok.gif I've still no idea why they make it so fiddly to setup - why make the dialing number for GPRS "*99***1#" ?????

By the way, I think the 115.2kbps you see is the connection speed between the laptop and the mobile phone - GPRS is a fair bit slower than that.
