hands free phone

New to the forum and now completely confused after reading some posts on this subject. I have a 97 A8 with factory phone. Want to be able to use my Nokia "hands free" and be rid of the factory phone. Easily done with a standard issue kit, but would love to have it "run through" the Bose and mute the radio. Any recommendations for doing this?

Hmm, complicated and not...

The std. setup is somewhat complicated, unless you have the Cullmann kit. That comes with a changable adapter, which allows you to buy a matching adapter for several phones. See www.cullmann.de

If not, it may indeed be wiser to get another kit. I went for the Sony Ericsson bluetooth, which works fine.

It doesn't run through Bose as such (any kit AFAIK, not even the std one), but it does interrupt the radio/CD sound. The actual phone speaker is located besides your seat, in the lower B pillar. The mic is probably in the front interior light cluster (may vary for different MY's).

I'll lookup the part nrs. for the SE kit if you want, or do a search for "bluetooth" in the A8/S8 forum.

Not familiar with the Cullman thing. The link takes me to a German site. Not so good with that lanquage, sorry. I wouldn't be unhappy with an aftermarket kit. Just curious if there is a simple ( or relatively simple) solution that could take advantage of the factory set up. Thanks for any further help. Cool site by the way. Just bought my A8 on EBay last month. What a fantastic machine. Best thing I've ever done. Only 50k on this one and simply the best auto I've ever driven. beerchug.gif

Totally forgot my manners, welcome to TSN first of all! beerchug.gif

It never seizes to amaze me what you can buy on eBay! Quite gutsy to buy a car like that!

Glad to hear you're happy with the car. The 8 is indeed amazing... What's your spec BTW? And we'd love to see some photos... cool.gif

As for my kit - installed by the dealer (at seller's cost) - they didn't use anything from the OEM kit, as that was not very feasable according to them. They hid the speaker nicely, so all I see is the bluetooth button, and the "advanced music mute" (SE) takes care of the muting. What's cool is that the music mutes entirely, but the volume of the navi instructions is turned down, so you can still hear it.

So IMO that's the way to go forward I think, unless it's a Cullmann. I'll lookup the cullmann setup a bit later, but in that case there should be a plug/connector between the cradle and the phone unit. Have you seen something like that?

Thanks for the welcome and clarification. I presume you mean pictures of the car and not me! Ebay is pretty amazing and not something I do much of. A leap of faith to say the least. Car is just in fabulous shape though and runs perfect. I'll take a look at the phone connection but don't spend any time on this. I think I'll just go forward with the aftermarket set up. Had those in other cars and they work just fine. Don't know much about the bluetooth stuff. Just a simple guy from the deep woods of Oregon ya know. beerchug.gif

Yeah I meant the car... grin.gif (there is a "rogues gallery" though if you must).

Bluetooth is very simple, might even be easier than a fixed kit, as you don't need the cradle and connector to the phone. You DO need a bluetooth phone though... wink.gif

Anyway, that's just an example. However it's a treat. Just keep the phone in your pocket, and it automatically connects as soon as you turn the ignition... cool.gif

Anyway, if you have the Cullmann kit it should look something like this:

PS: there is an English version of their site. wink.gif

What I have looks very similar to the drawing but not exactly. The cradle (4 thru 8) is the same but the phone (1&2) is one unit although it does have the plug in (3). The phone has the Audi logo and type # 441035104b if that does you any good. sekret.gif

My phone is dying and am planning to replace once I decide what will make the most sense. So a bluetooth phone, I guess would be fine. I'm a pretty cheap bastard though. tongue.gif
