seadweller Posted July 29, 2004 Report Share Posted July 29, 2004 Hiya, we have a Halfords one and it's pretty pants at keeping things cold. The main problem is that they keep things a certain amount cooler then the surrounding air, so if it's in the boot with loads of stuff around it (keeping the vent clear of course) the contents are far from chilled. Putting two or three of those ice pack things in helps (but wastes room) and having the stored items pre chilled is a must. All in all our one does not perform at all well, and I expect the Audi one will be about the same. That said it's a big improvement on not having one at all, and if like ours it does hot as well as cold, it's great for picking takeaways up We have been meaning to find a real D.B. one that will keep contents really chilled/cold but never got round to it. Also it takes up a fair bit of room as it is, and a better one may well be even bigger, so we've made do. At £89 my advice would be to give it a go and see how you get on, good luck. I have ordered from Audi and will be collecting today. It has an 18Litre capacity and is about the size of a coolbox!! Let's wait and see!! [/ QUOTE ] Yes, but I think that means that it will cool 20 deg lower than the temp around the box? And the temp in the back of your allroad stuffed with........ er, stuff, on a hot day is gonna be pretty high, so subtract 20 deg from that and you get barely cool tins of fizz. It may well be cooler if you stick it in the drinks holder and direct the air con vent on it? We have put our coolbox in the rear seat footwell on a couple of occasions, and it works much better there. I think what is really needed is a minifridge with a thermotstat, that achieves a temp regaurdless of the surroundings. But I guess such a device would be to much of a drain on the electrics Let me know how you get on with the Audi one, as if you rate it I might try one Oh and don't forget to unplug it at night, as I can tell you from experience that it will drain the battery , but you should be O.K. to leave it on all day. Hope this helps How you finding the allroad? We love ours, although have always hated the way it slumps at the rear (could do with an extra 5mm IMO), which is odd being that it has air suspension It can be modded but I doubt I'll ever get round to it. Like the allroad but after driving the A6 saloon it is a lot heavier and feels sluggish, but being 180 BHP actually goes very well. [/ QUOTE ] Well the rear looks a little low (In My Opinion), kind of like the boot is full of bricks. Which is annoying because whats the point of what is in effect self leveling suspension, if it always levels it to an uneven looking possition? Someone on Audiworld.com came up with a good phrase for it, but I cannot remember what it was As I said, the suspension settings can be altered, but you need a Vag Com, and with my luck I would end up buggering it, so I think I'll leave it be. seadweller Posted July 30, 2004 Report Share Posted July 30, 2004 I have done a bit of reserch, and it seems that it is indeed the car's 12 volt supply that is the problem. Even the 3 way power supply type does not use it's thermostat when powered by the car, and so can only opperate on a 20 deg differance like the Halfords/Audi one. The big advantage however is that if you plug it in to 240v at home/hotel the night before (where it would use it's thermostat and be like a normal frige/freezer), the 12v in your car would be enough to keep it pretty cold all day! The old Halfords (Mc Donalds for cars ) one is better than nothing, and great to keep your takaway warm/from spilling evrywhere, but we (wife and two little ones) drive a lot in U.K./Europe and really do need a prpoer fridge! Size was always a factor against getting a propper fridge, but if it performs well, it will be worth the sacrifice! seadweller Posted September 11, 2004 Report Share Posted September 11, 2004 The three way powered ones are the way to go, but £50 is not a lot of money, so one of the 12v ones is worth having to stop things getting hot/melting (or keep your takeaway warm, if they have a heat function as well), but I think describing them as a 'cool box' is going too far. We use our 12v one a lot, but it is mainly on the 'takeaway run' (to stop it spilling as much as anything) or the supermarket on hot days or when we are not going straight home.
