multitronic creep, and park

I seem to remember a post saying the multitronics don't creep like autos. Mine does. Just spent scary weekend driving through miniature Devon lanes with tight brambles either side, threatening the paint. Relieved, but tired after 250m drive home with hood down, stopped to post letter, forgot it was in drive, so rapidly put it into park whilst it was creeping, at about 1mph, does this matter?

No not at all... sure it's nothing to worry about! I certainly wouldn't ever leave it in drive and get out... very least I would put it in to neutral and handbrake, but just as easy to push it in to park.

I think it is meant to "creep" though, mine does and I like it - last car (non Audi, standard automatic) also did that and it's very useful in slow stop-go traffic, means you can drive just on the brake.

as you say creeping forward with no accelerator. Do you think it matters putting it into park when it is doing this around 1mph

But you had your foot on the brake, right? You shouldn't be able to move to park without doing that.

Personally I never use the handbrake (the armrest gets in the way), and only ever stick it in park. The manual even says the handbrake is optional and only really useful on big hills to reduce stress on the transmission when you move out of park.

It sounds to me like you are worried about damage from putting the car in park while you were moving, not worried about how the car moves while in drive but no gas pedal.

I really don't think that you could hurt it by doing that. I am sure it is not good for it, but one time isn't really gonna kill it. When you put the car in park a pin slides against a gear to stop the car from moving. So, theoretically, you could brake the parking pin and the car would still drive.

When younger I have abused a few rental cars. Based how rental cars (not Audi's) react. If you are going 10 or 15 mph the pin just makes a clicking noise until it can engage fully then the car just kinda rocks back and forth a bit. If you were going 2 or 3 mph the pin just goes in and the car rocks back and forth and stops.

So unless you got a big snapping noise and the park position no longer will stop the car from rolling while parked normally on a hill don't worry about it.

From what I remember from my Multitronic, you couldn't move the lever until the brake pedal was depressed.

That was the case even when the engine was turned off. I remember if I wanted to push it in the garage I had to put the ignition on depress the brake then I was able to move the lever so I could roll the car.

So...... from all of that I guess he must have depressed the brake tongue.gif

Unless he yanked it so hard of course ........ Flush.gif
