Playing DVD's on Navi Plus?

Recommended Posts

Although technically possible, I've never read anything that hints Audi are looking in to it.

It's a shame - the Mercedes COMAND unit (in the E/S class atleast) will play DVD movies in the nav drive. The new BMW's will have it "soon" with a software update.

It's possible to run AV inputs in to the TV module if you have it, or if not buy the module that gives the Nav+ direct AV input(s) for an external DVD player, but it would be nice just to slot a film in to the existing Nav unit.

The advantage of buying a seperate dvd player is being able to have a headreast screen in the back with headphones so the kids can watch a film while you listen to your music.

Russell, If you add rear screens on the audi tv tuner, does it still play the last thing you select on the tuner, either TV or AV, when you switch back to tuner/mp3 etc. so the kids can watch a film on journeys? It did on the BMW Nav, but can't find anything out for the RNS-E Nav.

Unfortunately/fortunately I dont have any back seats smile.gif

I never really use the TV feature, let alone watch a DVD. But it would be nice just to know I could.

The main thing that pisses me off, is not having bluetooth handsfree for my mobile. And TMC of course.

The TV module continues to output it's signal regardless of whether the headunit is "watching" it or not. However if you are plugging in a third party AV source (such as dvd player or whatever) then all you need to do is run the cables from this directly to the rear screens (in addition to the tv tuner). The TV module does not have a composite OUTPUT - in order to get the signal from the module in to additional screens you need to buy a box that will turn the rgb output into composite. I didn't bother with this as the rear passengers would constantly be asking you to retune the tv or change channel from the front if they had the option in the back smile.gif

I do split the video signal into the tv tuner _aswell_ so it can be viewed on the front screen if required, and of course I also feed the audi in to the tv tuner so I can play the audio from the films through the stereo.

There is (as far as I know) no "audi option" to have rear screens fitted in the A4, so basically you DIY and wire it up however you like.

Thanks for the replies.

Thinking about it, I had to add the second output on the BMW tuner.

I really want to know, if I make a cable up for RGBs and Audio, will the image display when I flick through the CD\TV button on the Nav? does it sense there is somthing there by the composite sync, or does it need a signal from the TV tuner?

Looking at the pin configuration on the back of the unit and the Dietz adapter it only seems to use the 32 pin grey socket (top left looking at the back of the unit) which makes me think as soon as this is plugged in it will work.

Maybe the car needs to be coded??

Russell, would you do me a really big favour?? Totally understand if you can't be bothered mate.

Would you unplug the 32 pin tv tuner connector and then see what happens when you try and change the source to TV? would like to see if it gives any messsage at all.

If you could I would be very grateful.

Thanks

If you're on the DVD based Audi Nav+ unit, I already know the answer smile.gif You need to keep the canbus line between the headunit and the tv module connected in order for the headunit to "recognise" that there is a tv input connected.

If you unplug the tv tuner 32 pin connector then the head unit will still work but there just won't be any "tv" option when you select "source". I had much fun with this when trying to work out how to get tv-in-motion working...

I'm not sure if there are any aftermarket solutions for the DVD based Nav+ yet to allow you get a TV/AV input - the only way i know at the moment is to get the Audi tv tuner.

Dietz do an av input that converts composite to RGB that the nav can understand.

Interface for the new generation of the AUDI 16:9 DVD navigation systems (only installed in A3 and A4). It converts the analogue video signal (PAL) in a gigital RGB-signal.

They said that you plug the grey 32 pin connector in then you need to give teh transcoder 12v, 12v switched and earth, which is why I am wondering if I could just make a cable up with RGBs\audio L+R? don't want to input composite when I am fitting a PS2 that gives RGB anyway.

The box must also give out a canbus signal in order to "trick" the headunit in to thinking that a tv tuner was present.

Without this canbus signal, the "tv" option will not appear on your headunit (I know, because mine has a switch on it).

What you probably would need to do is buy the above unit in order to enable the tv option on the headunit, then simply plug your PS2 connections in to the rgb pins of the 32 pin adaptor.

Maybe you could email them and ask? Also ask them if the unit will allow for "tv in motion", as if it does, I'll be ordering one wink.gif
