oil consumption

My 2001 2.0SE Passat's Check oil light came on twice in the last six months, each time requiring about 0.5l of oil to top it up. Is this normal for this car/engine? The manual seems to suggest it is, but none of my other cars has ever eaten this much oil - even my 25 year old Merc! No sign of a leak either.

Different cars of the same model will behave differently.

I have the 1.8 and it barely uses any oil between services and it gets quite a lot of abuse. Other cars do use lots even when they are driven sensibly.

Not really a good answer, but you just have a thirsty machine by the sounds of it.

My '03 TDi Sport's used about a litre of oil over 22,000 miles. I popped into the stealers to get some more oil (it's on longlife, so can only get the oil from there) and quizzed them about the high consumption. They said that I could expect anything up to a litre per 1000 miles depending on the age of the engine, and that it would get better over time.

My 33 year old Series 3 land rover uses virtually no oil at all...

Mind you, that's probably down to the Japanese replacement engine.

Cheers

Ben
