Avus_Bub
[ QUOTE ] I actually think £26k for mine is a bit of a bargain, and I know I could have had the same engine in an A3/A4 and had better quality interior, but really have you seen them? When I'm old and grey and have cataracts I might consider an A4 as an alternative to a Volvo or Honda. [/ QUOTE ] That means £26,100 for my S-Line must be the Fecking bargain of the century Coz I'd be Fecked if I'd pay £26k for 4pot Golf. I love it when people don't get how cool a car the A4 Avant is.........................................................

That's what I wrote about it originally and I've since noticed that a number of magazines have made reference to how they cannot understand why VW 'skimped' on the leather trim. NewNiceMrMe
Aswall, ultimately it's your choice and I did say that the Golf GTi is a nice enough car - but I said that at £20k I thought it was expensive. However, at £26k I cannot for the life of me think why anyone classes it as being good value - that's an astonishing price to pay (I appreciate you're saying it has every option on it). If it wasn't a company car, and was your own money, would you have chosen it? I'm genuinely interested in finding out. I mean, the alternatives at £26k are quite staggering....(I appreciate that CO2 emission levels and car tax could be a factor in this too)...and that not all of these cars might have been allowed under your company car policy.. Audi A3 3.2 V6 Sport/S-Line/Sportback - and money to spare Audi A4 3.0 TDi Quattro Audi A4 2.4 Convertible and a few options Audi A4 2.5 Tdi and an option Audi A6 2.4 SE NEW BMW 325i SE NEW BMW 330i SE (can be negotiated down to £26.5) BMW 320cd SE Convertible BMW 523i SE Jaguar S Type 2.7 D Lexus IS300 Mercedes E200K Saab 9-3 2.0T Aero (and the Conv can be negotiated to £26k) Subaru Impreza WRX STi VW Passat 2.8 V6 4-motion Volvo S40 T5 Volvo V50 T5 Volvo V70 T5 Volvo S60 T5 SE Now I'm not saying I'd have chosen all of the above, I wouldn't, but I'd say 50% of the list would be much more preferable to a Golf GTi in most circumstances. Was it a narrow band of cars you had to pick from?
aswall
Here's an email I received today from BMW today in response to my query, read the wording carefully [ QUOTE ] Thank you for your email to BMW Customer Information dated 17 June, 2005. We can confirm that if you opt for a leather upholstery you will find the following areas covered in leather for most models: Front seat centre and side panels Top of central armrest Gearshift lever gaiter Handbrake lever gaiter Rear seat centre and side panels. The leather covering will vary from model to model (the above applies to the new 3 series saloon) and we would suggest that once you know which model you are interested in, please advise us and we will be happy to send a brochure and a price list which has full details of the colour linked parts of the cars. If you would like a specific brochure, please provide us with full contact details and we will arrange for your nearest approved BMW dealership to supply the information. We hope this information is of use. If we can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact the Customer Information team. Yours sincerely Simon Wilding Product Information Advisor BMW Group United Kingdom [/ QUOTE ] I thought everyone knew this and, as far as I know, BMW are no different from other manufacturers. I do agree though that the leather on a VW does feel and smell cheaper than that on a BMW, which in turn feels and smells cheaper than Porsche leather

[/ QUOTE ] No, I could pick from any car (and as it's my company, it is my own money too) and could have gone higher if necessary though, as you mention, CO2 emissions were a factor. I have in fact already owned most of the cars you list (with the exception of Audi, Saab and Volvo which I find a bit insipid) or in many cases higher up versions, and I just get bored of having the same car twice. Remember also that many of the cars you list would be basic with no options and I like my toys. The only other serious contender was an E90 3 series, but the day I saw the official pics of it was the day I put the order in for the Golf

aswall
The side panels mentioned are what we would normally refer to as side bolsters rather than the actual sides of the seat. amokwa
I'm with Aswall on this one, the marketing / sales dept's generally advertise prices with minimal options. BMW for example have heated leather seats as optional whereas Volkswagen have them as standard. I tend to prowl dealer forecourts searching out nearly new VWs' with all the bells & whistles

fjfr
I definatly agree with M3Me on this GTI merlarky. There's loads better cars out there for 26K, and from his list I'd have either the A3 3.2 or 330ci. I know that CO2 and all that might make it more expensive or whatever, but I allways thought the GTI was an affordable, practical, sporty car. 26K doesn't say affordable to me. As M3Me points out, there's a bunch of (IMO better) cars than the GTI, and if you go 2nd hand, you could pretty much have anything!
dazdot
I also agree with M3ME on this, and i own a Mkv Gti. Cost didn't come into the equation as both my wife and myself chose this car on looks, the fun factor and the fact that from the release of the Mk1 gti, i swore that one day i would have one of those. Ok it was a lot of money for the car, but i always thought that everyone should buy the cars that they like, not just make do with cars that they can afford. Just my two penny worth.
