markandbron
I have a 2000 V5 Passat (150bhp) Any tips on modifications to everything: Engine, Suspension, Wheels and Brakes. I have priced lowering springs from a VW Dealer (£220), I have heard the Eibach springs are the same, is this right? Why are some V5's badged VR5's? Is there a difference? Any help appreciated....Cheers
shao_khan
Welcome to Tyresmoke. AMD in Bicester (www.auto-amd.com) offer engine tuning for the Golf V5 and Passat, so I would guess they cover yours. YOu would be looking at around 20bhp with rempa and a bit more with exhaust. The problem with any normally aspirated engine is that lots of power usually costs lots of money, but I would imagine you could probably get revised cams to make it rev a bit better/freer. Suspension - I am not keen on springs alone, they look nice, but I dont think they give an optimum ride quality, I would look at a replacement set of matched springs and dampers - say Koni / H&R something like that as it will give you a better ride and sporty feel. Downside is it would cost more than springs alone. The VW springs are Eiback, i brought my last set of springs from RSD (www.rsdcars-uk.co.uk) and they were cheaper than the VW part but were the same thing. Brakes - AMD and RSD offer Brembo, Porsche and Oettinger brake upgrades - all depends on how much stopping power you really want. I saw a Oettinger 368mm (think thats the size) disk conversion the other day and they are massive, would certainly need to uprate the wheels to fit the brakes in. These kits I would guess would be £900 plus. Cheaper option would be a set of better pads which would help feel but not giev you the stopping power of the new kits. As for VWs badging - I have no idea, I am sure they had a reason, but it is like the red I, T, D you get on some cars, appears to change with each model. markandbron
Thanks for the welcome and all the info, I've had a look on the websites you recommended. I'm gonna contact AMD about remapping. I'm gonna leave the brake upgrade as it's a bit expensive, and with a 20bhp increase I don't think it's required, I'll possible upgrade my brake pads though. shao_khan
Try a set of Greenstuff pads - they seem to be a pretty good upgrade over the standard options. IF you can stretch to it go for the Exhaust as well - heard a V5 Beetle that had remap and exhaust and it sounded great.
