CarMad
Ok so I have decided to buy a new PC. Given myself a budget of about 1k ish. Current spec looks something like this AMD 3500+ 939 Proc 250 Gb Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 10 HD Asus or Gigabit N Force 4 motherboad Asaka Lanboy Case 400watt power supply - a quite one not sure what yet. NEC or Plextor DVD-ROM and DVD Writer 16x But not sure what to get on the graphics front. I play stratergy and car games mostly but only the odd FPS. So would a Nvida6600 256Mb be enough or an ATI 800 Pro ? Or go for a Nvida6800GT Or ATI 800XT or are that all a bit overkill. Don't want bleeding edge because it bumps the cost up to much but do want a decent upgrade that will last a few years. The above might come from Scan / Mesh / Evesham and yes I know the service can be bad but so can getting all the parts seperately and trying to get them all to work and complaining if they don't. I am not too bothered with the after service so much to help me with it can manage that. Other alternative is to go for a top of the range Dell XPS Gen 3 or 4 system from their outlet store. But not sure I want another Intel chip and customised Dell only components again. Any thoughts on spec of the above and what card to get ? Will be buying within the next month I think. Blaa
I'd recommend the Chill Innovation power supplies.. Real stabel and even more quiet. And for Graphics.. Maybe a Geforce 6800LE? Something in the mid-range+ class..
CarMad
Could be an option. That power supply looks good thanks for the tip, it certainly has good specs and if its as quiet as the say I might go for it.
Sparky
ATI 800XT, top card. Avoid VIA chipsets at the moment. They are having more problems than usual. Top processor too. I bought the same processor with an Asus A8v deluxe and Corsair 2x512 EMS 3200Pro matched pair ram. System has a 1000mhz FSB, runs like sh!t off a shovel and put this with 4x 200GB RAIDed SATA disks. Fly in the ointment? ATI Radion 9800 Pro. Arse. Otherwise top system. I agree, avoid Intel. The XP64 was voted the fastest gaming chip even though the 64bit cannot be used yet. Belchy
This Tagan would be my choice. They have excellent reviews. Have you thought about These cases? They have 120mm fans which spin much slower and pass a greater volume of air ... making them quieter. The makers of this case are ex coolermaster people that broke away and setup their own firm. Check out the guides at Sharkey extreme for an idea of what works well with what.
Sparky
This is the case I selected. Comes with 1 12cm fan at the rear, a floating HDD caddy which takes 3 drives with a small fan at the front to blow cold air over it. A fan at the top of the case and two on the PSU. More importantly, it was a doddle to install. Everthing comes out and is clipable or screwed down. It even comes with castor wheels, and 7 million screws. About £120. For me, best case I've ever used.
CarMad
Yeah I have seen the silverstones. The Antec Super Lanboy is of similar spec bar no fancy screen to control the fans. It also takes 12cm fans for quieter cooling, not going to go for anything else other than that. Thanks for the link as well cheers.
