Cover on "other" cars

If anyone knows the answer to this outright or is willing to have a quick look it would be greatly appreciated.

Im covered third party, fire & theft on my car with norwich union, im wondering about whether im covered third party on other peoples cars as a few instances have arisen in the past that it would have been very useful.

There was an instance where it would have helped for me to drive a friends van but not being sure about whether I was covered I rang the customer helpline to be greeted by an indian worker. She informed me that I was covered third party on other peoples cars but to say another employee at her call centre didn't know what an alarm was, her word wasn't very reassuring so I didn't bother and have just began to wonder about it again.

My actual certificate of insurance states that I can drive cars loaned to me by garages and all the usual garble but also says that "Under the terms of section 2 - Liability to third parties - the policyholder may also drive a Motor car (or Motor cycle) not belonging to him/her or hired to him/her under a hire purchase or lease agreement." That to me doesn't mean I can drive a friends car but upon looking at this "section 2" I'm beginning to think I might be able to but still aren't sure, can anyone in the know about insurance please take a look at the policy wording here and have a look for me? Would me much appreciated.

Just noticed another bit on my certificate which might refer to what im after...

"THE INSURED VEHICLE

The vehicle registration mark described above or

1) **Garble about car from garage**

2) any vehicle loaned to the policyholder or, any other person entitled to drive as described in permitted drivers, by the insurer's nominated supplier as a result of a claim under this policy:

i) whilst the vehicle described above is being repaired or replaced or

ii) following theft of the vehicle described above"

The thing that throws me off is the ",' after "policyholder or" in the sentence marked 2). Is it saying that the policyholder is insured on ANY car and any named drivers can only drive cars supplied by the insurance companies selected garage or is it saying that the policyholder and named driver are covered for ONLY cars supplied by their preffered garages?

Please help, this has all confused me!

Remember what ever happens (if / if not covered) that when driving someone else's car (as I can as I am fully comp). I am only covered for my 3rd party liability i.e. if I smash up a mates car he will get nothing from my insurer. If I crash into someone else they get something. (i.e. my mate is not the 3rd party). A lot of people think that if you have fully comp insurance, that cover continues over when you are driving someone else's car (that has been lent to you), it does not.

I am not sure what the implications of a "theft of a car you have been lent" are, I have a feeling that that is not covered either....

Cars that are given to you while your car is being fixed are a different matter.

2) any vehicle loaned to the policyholder or , any other person entitled to drive as described in permitted drivers , by the insurer's nominated supplier as a result of a claim under this policy:

i) whilst the vehicle described above is being repaired or replaced or

ii) following theft of the vehicle described above"

This I think means

2) loaner car when yours is in the shop , anyone who is on the nominated drivers list(Supplied by you and forming a policy condition (me and my wife for example)) , or people from the repairers/bodyshop/garage etc as a result of a claim under this policy:

yup,

scooby is right, youand any named drivers in your policy are covered fully comp to drive any vehicle you are loaned by NU's repairers folling a claim.

You and you only are covered TPO to drive any vehicle that is insured and owned by someone else.

Scooby - you dont just get it when you fully comp thats an urban myth. It's granted on any cover level, but may be removed due to age or occupation (i.e motor tader)
