Various causes of "Ticking"??

OK, what are the various causes of ticking in an engine? I've drawn a complete blank here. I have a friend at work, who's '94 Ford escort wagon has started ticking when accelerating. He has recently changed spark plugs, so the first thing he'll do tonight is pull them, and make sure they are seated. But for some reason, I keep thinking about the valves, but can't remember WHAT.

Any ideas?

Thx,

THANK YOU, for the life of me I couldn't put 2 and 2 together earlier (must be all the SMOKE6.GIF) angelwings.gif

Yup, I bet you that's what it is, cause I could smell exhaust near the engine, when he started it up, and I know it wasn't from the muffler. It also makes sense since the damned thing has like 114k miles on it. Any way to be sure? And how big of a deal is it if it's just the gasket? Should be just a matter of pullung the mainfold and replaceing the gasket right? There shouldn't be much attached to the exhaust side, right?

Anyway, thanks for the quick reply, I'll let dude know what to look for.

Easiest way of locating such noises is to put a screwdriver onto parts of the engine with your ear to the handle, the screwdriver apllifying the noise and hey presto....you might locate the noise.

Most common cause of ticking is valve clearance!! Check it against the service specifications, if it continues after this but quiter then start looking for signs of wear on the cam lobes, as if worn these will again cause ticking.

Just rip that there rocker cover off!!

If you want to identify it is the valve gear making the noise, just take the rocker cover filler cap off and evaluate the change in noise level.

It should be pretty simple to do on a car of this age, as there are not so many plastic covers and parts to rip off on older cars.
