ChrisT
Hi All, Coming home yesterday when I pulled up to park, I couldn't select 1st, 2nd or reverse in my T Sport. It has been a little difficult to put into 1st recently but now I appear to have lost half the gearbox. The local Audi specialist is going to take it in tomorrow, though I have to drive it down there , I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced anything similar? My guess would be the gear linkage, anyone else got any ideas? Cheers, Chris.
fatcat
Chris - could it be your clutch that is stuffed.
Prhim
Lost reverse gear in my old Golf a while back - turned out one of the teeth had sheared off a gear and got itself stuck in the mechanism. But this only affected one gear, not two (so probably not much help then.....). A reconditioned box was cheaper than getting VW to rebuild it. And no, I wasn't crunching gears all the time, but the first owner must have!
ChrisT
I'm no mechanical expert, but if I can get into 3rd, 4th, 5th I would have thought the clutch was ok. Its typical the car has been great for 18 months and now this happens and its going to be 2 months before I see a pay cheque Chris.
PreacherCain
1st 2nd and reverse - sounds like it could be the synchromesh that's gone. Are you getting comedy graunching noises, or is the gearstick just stuck? If it's just stuck then the gear linkage could be at fault, but if it makes all kinds of "learner driver" noises then you may be able to get round it by double de-clutching when changing gear. A good article on how to do it: http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-article?article_id=3249 There are some excellent links here, as well: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm Hope you get it sorted without too much expense... ChrisT
Thats the weird thing, no funny noises etc, full movement of the gearstick, its just shifted over to the left, 1st, reverse position gets me 3rd, 2nd 4th and 3rd 5th. Very strange! Thanks for the links Chris.
r88per
I dont know whether the Audi set up is similar to that of other manufacturers but I know that with certain vehicles that the linkage can actually slip out of alignment. It may be a simple fix, (I know it is on a vauxhall just a matter of undoing the pinch bolt on the linkage and lining the gearstick up then re-tightening the bolt.) From your explanation of what is happening when you try to select 1st and 2nd then this sounds as though what has happend. Whoops just had a look at the diagrams for the selector on EKTA looks a "bit" more complex than this, but hey its a thought.

[/ QUOTE ] I thought this, also; my old SEAT had a really dodgy shift into 1st and 2nd straight from the factory. Without even needing to drive it, my dealer took a set of allen keys to it and fixed it within 10 minutes. Best of luck. Wik.
ChrisT
Just to let you know, I've just spoken to the people at the garage and I had managed to snap a bracket holding the gear linkage to the car. So hopefully it won't cost too much, though knowing audi a small metal bracket could cost up to £50 Chris.
gambba
Probably the one thing they didn't tell you was that the bracket was welded to the chassis, so in order to replace it they've placed an order for a new chassis I don't know I'm kinda shocked sometimes at the parts prices, sometimes how low and sometimes how high they are!! Typical examples; S3 centre console surrond in black piano paint - €196.35 Same part for A3 in Kajal(Black) - €23.62 ......That's expensive paint that piano paint! 's Water pump for 1.8T €56 !!! Not bad , but then add 3-4 hours of AUDI labour and you end up with a bill for €400 and no play money for chip tuning
ChrisT
I know that is why my car isn't being treated by a stealership, but a local independant specialist who only uses genuine parts etc, but the labour is only about 1/3 of the audi cost. Much better for me and they have always done a good job. Chris.
