misternomer Posted April 27, 2005 Report Share Posted April 27, 2005 I notice my ABS light came on this morning along with the light with the exclamation mark with a clockwise circle arrow (ESP?). This has been acompanied by a very gentle ABS judder when coming to a rest under light braking when on uneven road surfaces (not gravel, just slight undulations in tarmac). Can anyone suggest what this might be and the likely course to rectify. I'd like to know if I'm in for a major bill at next weeks service - as I'll need to cancel other toys if that's the case;-( Do I get servicing credit for using the word 'undulations' in my post:-) ? PaulW Posted April 27, 2005 Report Share Posted April 27, 2005 Super simple.....just pull the wheel, pull the ABS sensor and clean the tip with brake cleaner. Push it back in and install the wheel. One of my ABS sensors failed just under a year after being replaced and upon phoning to book the car in at the stealer I discovered that the warranty actually lasts two years rather than the one I was expecting. Handy given the tendency these things have to fail. s still managed to extract some cash from me though - it turned out that both front sensors needed replacing (or so they said)! PSU Posted April 28, 2005 Report Share Posted April 28, 2005 I have the exact same problem and usually starts to appear after about 45 minutes worth of driving. Turn the ignition off and it goes away then comes back 10 minutes later. Took the car into Parklands Audi two weeks ago (still under warranty) and they have diagnosed a faulty 'slip ring' in the steering column . They are collecting it today to replace the part but I'm not holding my breath on this as it just does not make sense to me. My A8 has got the yaw sensors in the column and have been replaced by Parklands Audi in Gloucester under warranty - cleared the problem. misternomer Posted May 15, 2006 Author Report Share Posted May 15, 2006 Update on this problem. Over a year later and I'm still getting this problem. ABS light comes on intermittently and occasionally goes off for a while when starting the car again. Has a tendency to judder on braking at low speeds and over uneven surfaces. Each time I've taken it in they've pulled and reseated the sensor and it's fixed it for 500 miles. Here's the thing. I hate replacing things that are ACTUALLY WORKING on point of principles. Since it's clearly working it's way loose or dirty, or both. I'm going to clamber under the car myself this evening and do the follwing: 1: Pull the sensors and clean with brake cleaner 2: Reseat with something that will grip them in their holes a bit better. I'm thinking maybe a tiny dab of Loctite or something. Is this a BAD IDEA? I don't think there's anything wrong with the ABS sensor per se and I prefer to fix rather than replace. More satisfying! nikw Posted May 16, 2006 Report Share Posted May 16, 2006 The Loctite will obviously hold the sensors in position, but won't prevent them from getting dirty, so it depends which of the two is causing your problems.
