spacelord
Coming back from lunch today, I couldn't unlock my car anymore by pressing the unlock button on the key. Luckily I could still open the car by using the key "manually" on the driver's side door. As soon as I put the key in the ignition, I heard the central locking system "click" unlocking all the other doors, and more importantly, the remote started working again It's the second time this has happened in a week. The other time it was at home, so I tried unlocking it with the spare key first and that still worked. Has this happened to anyone before? I'm assuming it's a problem with the key losing its programming or something. Btw the car is a 4 week old Audi A4 B7.
Chav
I've had that a couple of times. Like you say though, turning on with the ignition resynchronizes everything and its fine
UBM
Just the key and the car getting out of sync. If it does it again, just do the same! or use the other key...
spacelord
I did panick there for a moment ... thought I'd be stranded 100km from home and in a different country. Also, turning the key on the driver's side door lock didn't activate the central locking system (no audible click). So my initial thought was that the car stayed locked So what could cause the key to go "out of sync" with the car? Can it be caused by inadvertently pressing the buttons when the key's in your pocket?
UBM
It could. I think the key transponder looks for the receiver in the car and after a few presses with no luck gets out of sync with the pulse it sends and the car needs to receive (or seomthing!). iantate59
You can re-sync the remote by using the key to open the driver's door. Press the unlock button on the remote, put the key in the ignition and switch on the ignition. Switch off the ignition and remove the key. Press the unlock or lock button on the remote. See page 59 in the Owner's manual.

UBM
Fraid not! With my B6, one of my cars packed up. So I used the other one to open the car, put the "broken" one in the ignition and hey presto!
stratty31
Guys. Guys, Guys!! I'm afraid to say that i know the fix for this..there is a problem with the new B7 remote keys..they are intermittantly loosing their "rolling code"..i believe there is a new key fob availible in the Uk now..the cause may be due to the remote being operated out of range of the vehicle..the short term fix is exactly what you're doing..unlock manually, iggy on within 10 secs, doors unlock, press lock button once(key still in iggy), remove and try..should work for a while, but will probably fail again..get down to the centre for a new set of remotes..they should be aware by now..hope this helps..simon

I'll get in touch with my dealer next week, see what they say. Where have you heard about this if I may ask? yen77
this happened to me the other day. drove back from work as usual (50 mins dual carriageway) and decided to stop at the local sainsbury's to get some bread. got out the car and lo and behold, the remote just would not work. the lights were flashing indicating it was transmitting, but the alarm just did not activate. i ended up using the key to lock the car, which activated the alarm. did my shopping, came out and it didn't work again. used the key to get in, started up and drove away. when i got home, about 3 miles later, the key worked again. i sat there and wondered if it was some kind of keycode grabbing scam or jamming thing going on at the car park. i then read the manual and it says that sometimes the key can be temporarily disabled by mobile phone or tv transmitter, ie any transmitter nearby. has not given any problems since. a4tdi130
I had problems with my B6 A4 aswell, every now and then the transmitter just didn't seem to work very well. Shame to see they knew about it, but didn't fix on the B7.

[/ QUOTE ] Well in this case it's not a problem of the transmitter not working too well, but rather that the key loses the programming making it not work at all. A problem introduced with the B7 keys, and supposedly fixed with a new key ... When it "doesn't work very well" (eg. you have to get really close to the car to get it to work, or press the button repeatedly), it is usually caused by interference with other radiosignals, and there really isn't much they could have done about that. They can't change the laws of physics In my experience, all remote systems suffer from this, though some more than others. The absolute worst was the old Ford Scorpio I drove a few years back. The remote just refused to work more than 50% of the time, and it even seemed to be dependent on where the car was parked (I had more problems at home than at work).
