A8 tiptronic trans help please!

Hi all, I have a late 1997 A8 4.2Q sport with 83k on it, prob is my trans when cold seems ok, get about a mile down the road, and it goes into e-mode or limp mode (3rd gear pull aways etc. I've taken it to Audi (useless people!), and I got 2 fault codes on g/box ECU...1. 17114 P0730 035 (Incorrect gear ratio), and 2. 17117 P0733 035 (Gear 3 incorrect ratio), no other codes came out. Well as the car was in limp mode, I would expect this to be the case??. I was told this is a mechanical problem not a electrical or valve body prob and I need a new g/box. I reckon thats rubbish!!

Do you guys think an oil change/filter and a flush could cure my prob or what would be the best way forward, thanks in advance.

sorry for the long post

A gearbox oil change would be the cheapest option but may not cure the problem but as a new box is £3,500+ depending on which dealer you use you may not have much choice other than to give it a go.

there are a few independants that some members have used for a rebuild, i've seen £1700 quoted from a place in Huddersfield

Welcome to TSN 169144-ok.gif

Sorry to hear of your probs with the tranny; Oil changes cost from £120 upwards depending on the dealer or specialist. mine cost about £120 from parklands in gloucestershire, where are u based?

The codes will have to be cleared using VAGcom and Paul W or one of the veterans (who'll be along soon)can help you with the codes I have only just bought the software so am a bit of a novice.

Its amasing how many times you get told that any sort of a problem with the tranny means you need a new one; Audi has apoloicy of changing the whole Gbox rather than sorting out the faulty component.

Anyway hope it gets better soon. 169144-ok.gif

What gearbox code do you have?

If you arent sure where to find it look on the sticker thats in your spare wheel well and or front of Service book. It will have various letters and numbers in it, but it should say ABZ (engine code for a 4.2) then gearbox code *** (CML/CUE/DTD, etc)

I had a guess and have dug up some information for you.

All the information points to a transmisson fluid and filer change, in most cases as long as you havent lost a gear completely (such as reverse) then a filter and fluid change should see you back on the road almost as good as new.

It could in the worst case scenario require a new gearbox but I wouldnt panic quite yet.

You do need to get that fluid and filter change done as soon as possible though, I wouldnt drive it unless you have to beerchug.gif

I have the ABZ engine and DTD gearbox, and I think your probably right about the 2 oil changes, doing the diff leak will help do the pan as well, so it looks like I got a chance?....only thing I'm not sure of is those 2 g/box codes, and if they must be cleared, either by VAGcom or a few OK starts, or would disconnecting the battery clear codes, is it safe on the Audi system......thanks.

The incorrect gear ratio is a problem that sometimes can be fixed by a fluid and filter change.

However, if the gearbox goes into "limp home" mode when driving along and then when it shifts into third gear, you could have a mechanical problem with a clutch.

The are six clutches in the gear box which are either held or not held to engage the gears. They are all wet clutches.

I've seen a few recent problems that were troubleshot and for example, when the clutch F stops working, reverse is lost. One guy in the states took his tranny apart and found it was a ripped clutch plate. Another failure was an shtf.gifring unseating, which caused another tranny to loose 2nd gear.

Try this: start the car, and drive it in tiptronic. Does it drive normally in 1st gear? Shift into 2nd, does it drive normally? Shift into 3rd? Does it drive normally or does it immediately go into limp mode? If it goes into limp mode, then turn it off, reset everything, start it back up and then from 2nd, QUICKLY hit the upshift twice so it goes right to 4th from 2nd and don't give it any gas.

Does it drive normally in 4th and 5th? If every time you shift it and goes into limp in 3rd gear, then you probably have a ripped clutch plate or something of the sort.

You can then just have it rebuilt, it's just the clutch assembly that's the problem.

Here's a picture of the clutch assembly. It has two sets three sets of gears and clutches, some are held and some are allowed to spin to change the gear combination.

It is like a motorcycle wet clutch. It has a six clutches though. If you have the problem with 3rd gear as indicated above by troubleshooting, then you'll need to go into it and replace the bad component. Other than that, your tranny is probably fine.

thanks for all the info........so try the tiptronic test as Paul suggested, do the diff seal and change the fluid/filter and see what happens, (I forgot to say that I was told my fluid was burnt),.... will I definately have to get those codes cleared? or were they there only because it was in limp mode when they tested it?, I suppose if its ok after, the codes won't matter will they?, anyways, if still no good I suppose its a rebuild?

By the way, I had a follow up call from Audi Customer care regarding the Computer test and the £111 charge, and they agreed that I wasn't treated in a proper manner and I MAY get some sort of recompense, the Manager will call me after a report has been given to him!!....now there's a first eh?

Not so good news I'm afraid, picked it up drove it about a mile, worked ok, but it threw most of its fluid out through the breather when it got hot, they've done it again so we'll see. Wonder why it threw the fluid out?, couldn't get a definate answer from them why, these guys were recommended!, you rebuild build a box with new Converter, it should be right 1st time yes?

You say it "drove ok", after a rebiuld I would expect it to drive bloody perfect EEK2.GIF With no jerks and no shunts either during changing of the gear (which should hardly be noticable at low speeds) or taking up drive from a standing start.
