S8 GEARBOX Problem - Opinions appreciated

To be fair to the dealer's on this point Audi say a gearbox fluid change should be about 3 litres on my gearbox, a bit odd considering it has a capacity of 9.7 litres.

It generally works on the basis that you get as much fluid out as you can, the guide on Audipages helps in this respect. Once everything is back together its just a case of topping it back up to its level, however much it takes.

This is one of the reasons it is suggested to do the gearbox flush a couple of times because itll help get as much of the old oil out as possible.

Well, I'm getting nowhere fast here.

I called the dealer last Monday and told him that I thought he'd only done half the job, in that he'd changed the gearbox oil but hadn't done the filter as asked. He said to me "There's no oil filter in the S8 gearbox". I told him that there was, and gave him the part number. He said "I'll check it and get back to you." Silence ensued, so the next day I phoned again. He told me he hadn't heard back from Parts yet, and would call me back. He didn't call back. Same thing the next day, and he also missed another promised call back on Thursday. When I chased him on Friday, he said he'd got the information and would call me Saturday morning once he'd read it through. He did not call Saturday morning. On Monday I left him an answer machine message, and he called back at a time that I'd told him I wasn't going to be in. It's now Tuesday, eight days later, and I'm getting fairly bored of certain Audi dealers.

What should I do? Obviously, if I keep plugging away at this dealer I've got some leverage to get a price reduction because the job wasn't done properly in the first place. On the other hand, I'm approaching my mid-thirties now so I might die of old age before they get round to dealing with it. I also have the concern that if they don't know there is a filter there they probably have never had to do this job before and might louse it up.

Are there any decent (I know this might be an oxymoron) Audi dealers in South Wales? Has anyone used the Cardiff, Swansea or Newport Audi dealers for the gearbox oil change, or indeed is there a decent independent?

Ive booked the car in at Parklands on Monday to do the ATF/gasket/filter change all for... wait for it... £108 jump.gif

I'm doing it again cos the gbox is misbehaving now and then slightly and you can never get rid of all the crap the first time round as there is always fluid left in there.

Thats prolly what this wnaker is hoping for. He has your money, so you can sdo-off somewhere else!

I quizzed them on the proceedure and they seemed to know the method I've posted the previous recipt b4 on here. They say that all the fluid cant be drained out in one go cos a considerable amount is left in torque converter portion.

They charged £8.23 per qts of ATF 169144-ok.gif

Slough Audi said £180 to just change the atf no filter...hmmm

My thoughts precisely. It's a choice between trying to get them to do it properly or quitting while I've still got a working car.

As a sanity check, can anyone with an S8 (not an A8 4.2), preferably a '97 or '98, confirm that they've had a gearbox oil change and that the filter (01L-325-429-A) was done?

It worries me how much sludge might be sitting in the torque converter that you can't get out. When I had mine done last time, they charged me 5x £8.35+VAT for oil, which I assumed was 5 litres, but the capacity seems to be more like 8-9 litres. That's a lot of old gunk congealing round your torque converter...

Put exactly this in writing to the MD of the company that own the stealership, copy it to the stealer DP and A8 cost/serv. When this filters down to the workshop manager things should start moving. You still have the choice to go elsewhere, but someone is gonna get it...

I fired off a broadside via e-mail to their "Head of Business" this morning. Very swiftly got a phone call from their After-Sales Manager, and as a result it's going back in to have the work done next Friday. Fingers crossed...

You're right of course, Sneaky. Letting loose with a torrent of expletives rarely gets them to do what you want. Althought it can make you feel better, right up to the point where they put the phone down on you.
