Note: This must be done in your HEAD only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it. Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000 Now add 10. What is the total? Scroll down for answer. Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100. Don't believe it? Check with your calculator! scooby_simon
[ QUOTE ] Oops! None of the answers are wrong though. [/ QUOTE ] If you overtake the last person (and you are first in a 2 car race), i.e. you have lapped last, you are 2nd from last (i.e. first). sophiem
Ok, ok, I guess I need to spend more time thinking about these things - you guys obviously spend quite a while doing so!
a4tdi130
I got the 4100 and the daughter's name one right without any thinking - can't work out how people would get 5000 for the maths one??
Thorburn
[ QUOTE ] I got the 4100 and the daughter's name one right without any thinking - can't work out how people would get 5000 for the maths one?? [/ QUOTE ] Because you are thinking in thousands and take the end result up from 90 to 1000. I got 1st, 3rd and 4th ones right, although the second one is a bit ambiguous. Sipperana
With the second one, I guess it depends on what the definition of overtaking is, and how different that is from lapping someone. Semantic experts help please! The rest were pretty straightforward.
FiftyPence
its all a matter of how much you read into it. I mean if you were to take a single length of swimming as the race then you couldnt lap the person who is last however if it was a car race on a track of a number of laps then you could lap the back marker
Wadders67
Ahh...but forgetting any 'lapping', in order to overtake the last person, you would have to be behind them, which you can't be because they are last. In essence, you would have to overtake yourself, which you can't. But if you could, you would still be last! Well....that's my take on it anyway! FiftyPence
reading that remind me of an age old explanation of the rules of cricket which begins something like this: ''When you're in you're in, and when you're out you're out but when you're in, you can also be out'' I couldnt find the full explanation anywhere though. sophiem
My uncle has a tea towel with that explanation of cricket on it - I'll have to dig it out and post the full version, or is that just sad?
