Appointment Required?

Recommended Posts

The engine management light has decided to rear its ugly head, only came on last night and today being my day off is an ideal time for me to take it to the stealers for a look under warranty.

Do you guys think they will have a look at it when I take it up or just insist I make an appointment?

It depends how you want to play it. One of two ways wink.gif

1) Be honest, phone them up, say the light has come on and you've got the day off and can they take a look. If they aren't fully booked or if they are in a good mood they will squeeze it in.

2) - this is what I would do - take it to the local dealer, say that you were setting off to an important meeting in (insert far away city) and the light has come on and you need it sorting immediately. Be polite, but be clear that you are annoyed that the light has come on and expect it to be sorted whilst you wait.

Good idea with the meeting thing but I don't think I'll be able to pass it to be honest. 18yo lad with shorts and a t-shirt on!

Might go buy top gear magazine or something of sorts and just ask that they sort it while im there, always the free cans of coke for me to have a go at while I read, suppose the phone call is a good idea as well though!

Cheers XC.

Hehe smile.gif Depends how far away the dealer is, from my experience they will feel more inclined to try and squeeze you in if you are stood infront of them with your car parked outside, than being on the end of the phone. If it's not too far, of it you haven't got anything better to do today (it's nice and sunny, good for driving!) then pop over.

Be careful though because although the engine management light is usually caused by something minor, it _could_ be something very serious.

My car was almost due for a service a few months ago when the engine management light came on. I phoned Reading Audi to book it in for the service and they told me I'd have to wait a couple of weeks. As soon as I mentioned the warning light, I was told to bring it in the following day. Obviously couldn't get a courtesy car, but I was able to arrange something myself on that front.

The receptionist put me through to the tech to make an appointment and he said they're having staff shortages and are overbooked already to friday so 10am friday it is then.

I quizzed him about whether or not the car will be OK being driven with the light on and he asked if it was constant on or flashing, told him it was just constantly on and he said it will be fine. If it goes bang, I'll be happy for them to pay for everything under the warranty anyway!

I would have gone up in person but the receptionist usually doesn't want to know and they have always looked down on me being a young lad and all that.

Wish I could take it down to the other dealers near me as the staff there seem to be much more friendly and helpful but Im quite sure Approved Used warranties aren't recognised by anyone but the dealer you bought it from.

I went to Wayside Audi in MK when looking for my first A3 and was looked over by the salesman as if to say this guy probably can't afford an Audi, hence I walked away and bought one privately!! Stealers are feekers for discrimination, try and find someone with Vag-com instead

Won't really benefit me finding someone with VAG-COM though as it's most probobly going to be something that needs fixing over a false alarm. A good friend of my dad's has a proper VAG-COM unit thingy so I might go see him before just to be sure of the problem but if it's going in to be fixed I might as well just let them find the problem as well!

A few of the guys up at Lightcliffe VW are actually ok like the guy that sorted the test drive out for me, let me take it on my own because they were a bit busy even though your supposed to be accompanied up to 21yrs or something. Other than these few they are all just like you say, look down on me just because I'm a little younger than most of their customers and my car isn't the most expensive they have ever sold.

I'll tell them where to shove their charge if they try it with me. It's downright cheeky if they do with it being under warranty, plus I just can't afford to be paying for things to do with the car. I paid the premium buying an approved used and expect problems fixed fuss free in return.

Don't think they will though, they were suprisingly willing to sort the rattle I had without even a hint of a charge.

Don't mean to sound padantic here but is it the same with VW approved used warranties?

Anyway, back to my original point. The light decided to go out a few days later so I gave them a buzz and after a quick chat with the tech I decided to just cancel the appointment and definately take it in if the lights decided to come back on again. Cheers for all the advice anyway guys. 169144-ok.gif

It's usually the same with any "main dealer" warranty. I've owned four different brands of car that came with dealer warranties, never a VW mind, and with all of them you can take the car to _any_ main approved dealer.

I expect it's the same for all brands.
