not starting/cutting out

First post on here - hoping some of you can help.

I have a '96 Mk3 golf tdi with a 1Z engine (90bhp). It's got 150k on it, but recently had problems with it: sometimes, whether engine's hot or cold, it won't start and the glow plug light on dash remains on. It'll turn over etc, but will not catch. I assumed this would be the glow plugs - however, a few times it has cut right out when moving. The engine doesn't stutter - just stops - not good at 90mph! I think these problems are related, but would the glow plugs have anything to do with it when engine has been running for a while and is warmed up? Could it be the injectors/ injection pump?

Any suggestions really appreciated. Please!!

Thanks, Pete.

You might want to change the relay numbered 109. It provides all the main power, and when the solder starts failing inside it does this.

The only thing which doesn't follow is the glow plug light usually stays off when the relay fails. I doubt very much if th glow plugs are naff.

Thanks! I'll have a look.

As you say, I agree that it is unlikely to be glow plugs as the problem normally occurs when engine is warm, which negates need for the glow plugs. Spoke to a garage who also thought it sounded like an electrical problem due to the nature of it cutting out at speed. Anyone know of a vw specialist in/near Swindon?

Cheers, Pete.
