Cayenne S Tyre Wear

Hi all

I recently met a fellow Cayenne S driver in the queue for new tyres at Micheldever Tyres Services near Basingstoke, Hants. We quickly realised that we were both suffering from the same problem with excessive tyre wear on the outside edges of both front tyres. We are both running 20" Cayenne SportDesign wheels with original equipment Michelin tyres. We had both independently complained to our respective Porsche centres and were told that the wheel alignment was 'within specification' and therefore there was no problem with the car. I had escalated my issue to Porsche Cars GB who told me that the same thing and refused to do anything about it.

My Cayenne has done 14,000 and is on it's 3rd set of front tyres. I have owned many performance and 4x4 vehicles in the past and have never experienced front tyre wear from new to bald in 6,000 miles. The rear tyres lasted for 13,500 miles which is acceptable.

We both believe that there is a manufacturing setup issue here and are keen to understand whether other Cayenne drivers are experiencing this ludicrous tyre wear also.

Hi Everybody,

I bought a Cayeene S with 20 Inch Wheels, I had to move the Front Tyres to the Rear after 7,000 Miles the Front Tyres were almost new in terms of tread wear. The outside shoulders were very worn.

I took my car to Porsche Hatfield who suggested I had driven Badly! Checked the vehicle and said it was set up as specified by Porsche GMBH.

Speaking to the Salesmen they said that Cayennes did eat the side walls! One Customer was very irate when he needed new Tyes after 5,000 Miles!

What experience to other Cayenne, Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo Drivers Have?

I believe that Porsche have a Very Big Problem but currently will not admit it.

A friend of mine has a Cayenne S and he needs new tyres after about 6000 miles too. He's not really bothered about it, but I thought I'd mention it on here as it does seem to be a common issue. Is it a fault/problem though, or is it just to be expected with that amount of weight and power combined with the front wheels being the ones that turn?

Hi all,

Just joined the forum, hence the reply 1/2 year late.

The Cayenne has known geometery problems at the front end. Some of the early ones left the factory with the wrong settings. We had one in work with the same problem. Only found out after 5k miles and a new set of fronts. We found a leaked internal memo in the USA saying if customers complained they were to recieve a free geometery check and a new set of tyres as a goodwill gesture but not to mention it was a warrenty claim.

Hope this helps someone out.

Regards

Drew

Hi everyone,

I am in the middle of this very same problem! I've just replaced the fronts on my wife's Cayenne, which was equipped with 20" SportTechno wheels and Michelin Diamaris tyres. They had very excessive tyre wear on the outer edge after less than 10k miles, and were illegal after less than 12k miles... even though the inner half of the tyre was close to perfect!

The specialist used (Jeffreys in Warrington - excellent!) to replace the tyres said that they see this on the Cayenne all of the time - apparently it's a common problem, especially on the heavier cars.

I've complained a lot, and have been fed all kinds of rubbish by the OPC and Porsche GB, both of whom are unwilling to do anything about it or even recognise it as a problem. So I've recently contacted Watchdog and TopGear to see if we can drum up some interest. They both want to know if this is a problem that affects more than one person... so is anyone here up for a group complaint?

BTW... I've also told Porsche that I am selling the Cayenne and the 911 as a result of this and other service issues I've had with them, but this is the last straw. The cars are generally great, but the aftercare service just sucks!

I too has both my fronts replaced today @ Micheldever Tyres (£263 for 2 BStoem R30s 18inch 225/55 all in) @ 10k mls - not impressed with this. I only looked last night after reading this thread - they must have been illegal @ less that 8k as one was down to the canvas!! I'm more concerned that some cars wear on the outside and some, like mine, wear on the inside. How can this be across a correctly aligned model class? My car has only done 10k since new. I would like PGB to expalin whats happning here, but suspect that PGB will not do so unless that whole user experience is presented - maybe Watchdog or TG is the best vehicle

I have similar problems with my cayenne v6 it is eating tyres unevenly and along with all the other problems i have had including a new engine, it has not been an enjoyable experience. I would be happy to join forces to make PGB answer to there commitments on customer care and reliability.

Oh yes, the joys of 20" on a cayenne. The wifes is the same, 6000 and the front are finished. Had the geometry checked, all ok. It is the 20" wheels, too much weght. The 19" seem a lot better, but needless to say the salesman did not mention it when we were adding them to the long list of options to the car. Think we are all going to have to put up with it. It's interesting to see the complaints here.

My R32 chews through a front set (inner shoulder down to the belts) in 9000km (~5500 miles!) if I don't rotate them and it is aligned to factory specs.

I've heard that the suspension set up on the Cayennes works brilliantly on the 19" wheels, but the 20" (and now 21") wheels caused issues on many of the first generation vehicles... Maybe drop a wheel size and see what happens?

I'd be curious to find out if owners with 19" rims have the same experiences, esp. as I'm toying with getting a Cayenne GTS with 21" rims!!!

IHi i have a cayenne s with 19" wheels, and it has just done 18k on a set of tyres, I did rotate them after around 10k as the fronts were wearing harder.

My wife drives it most of the time but I drive it quiet hard when i do...

every 6000 ,miles must be a nightmare!

I used Pirelli Pzero rosso tyres

Bought my Nov 2003 S with 20" Porsche Designs at 18 months old with 18K on the clock, and replaced the tyres (Michelin Diamaris) at around 26k miles. At that point it was the outer shoulders of the tyres that forced the change.

Currently at 36k and have around 4mm of tread left - again slightly more worn on the outer edges of the front rubber, so I suspect that the car is getting through a set every 13k miles or so. Drive reasonably hard so reading there does seem to be an extraordinary variation in set up.

Just read this thread Ben, I have the X6 35D, running 367BHP (power upgrade) covered 9K, hardly any wear on the tyres at all. Cayenne are very hungry front tyre eaters, I hate them and they aint fast unless you've bought the turbo.

PS) 20" wheels with 315 Tyres

Hi all. Hopefully about to buy a V6 S auto with 19's. Worried about this tyre wear. I do 95% motorway miles but about 30k a year. Will motorway use mean less wear per mile than not?!?!

Advice is gratefully recieved.

Thanks

NOPE; my mate has just got shot of his, 19K three sets of tyres:eek::eek:

 Well quite interesting all the above, Read on

PORSCHE dont give a toss. Cayenne Turbo S 25000 miles (up for sale) 3rd set of tyres now required, on second set complained to Porsche and had tyres sent to Michelin for response. Report excessive tow out, as an ex tyre fitter and knowledgable on tracking (Old ford Anglia big engine wide wheels etc) used line props to check tracking. Checked track as per Porsche spec if I remember 4 deg 4 secs found slightly out, reset with slight more tow in than suggested, Bugger me this new set worn down on inside to canvas, punture this morning found this out, (last night with family on board 120mph back from Donnington airport :eek:) There is something seriusley wrong with the Porsche geometry set up on this model and could cost someone ther life.

I would suggest that driving at 120mph with your family on board a blowout would not only kill you and them but other road users as well. Totally irresponsible!! and you say PORSCHE don't give a toss.
