The spiked 'stingers' used by police to puncture the car tyres of criminals and slow them down are useless on run-flats.

This means high-performance models such as the BMW Z4, which are fitted with the special rubber, are immune to the traps.

Run-flat technology was designed to let motorists drive with a puncture for up to 50 miles. And while manufacturers recommend the tyres are not run at more than 50mph, they are so effective that even at high speeds there is little

effect on a car's stability.

A Tyre Industry Council spokesman told us: "A stinger's hollow plastic spikes normally pierce the tread for a quick puncture. But with this new rubber, which has stiffened sidewalls to stop you getting a flat, they are useless." He added that one run-flat maker is working with police to find a solution, while Home Office scientists are developing alternatives to stingers including a stun gun that zaps a car's ECU to cut the engine.
