WhiteHArtMart
Hi all - its decision time for me. I've had a good year's motoring in My A3 TDI Sport Sportback but I think the time has come for a little more excitement!! Seriously tempted to get a Mk V GTI now - had a quick test drive in a DSG equipped one and loved it! My problem will be deciding on what extras to get - I always end up spending too much money that I never see back in the resale price!! At the mo I think I'll skip the leather and maybe go just for the winter pack and 18s?? Maybe the centre armrest as well as I do quite a lot of driving for my work! Bit of a long winded post I know but hope to have some picture of a motor to post on here ...... in 5 months time!!!
AJno1
I know what you mean about options.I always get carried away when I spec a new car. I've thrown nearly £5k at my GTi. The centre Arm Rest is an absolute must. Visually I think the 18s set the car off beautifully being a different colour to the 17s, but everyone will have varied opinions on that. I ordered Leather, but the normal cloth is meant to look great anyway. Either way you'll love it more and more every time you drive it.
RedRobin
WELCOME!! ....I see you are in Cornwall - I'm based in West Dorset and I know you'll find the GTI purrfect on West Country roads. Especially the DSG although that's personal preference. Apparently leather can be a bit slippy but the cloth is good, stylish, and can be ScotchGuarded or similar. There have been some problems with the 18s - check out <18" Monza Issue> post in Index here. Centre Armrest is good....You can adjust it and there is useful storage inside unless you have a CD changer. You have only to read the posts in this TSN forum to realise that we all appreciate how excellent the GTI Mk5 is. It's a major all-rounder....It does it ALL pretty well. IF you could bear to part with her even 12 months from now, you'd probably get your money back (except any aftermarket mod costs). Demand is very high....Such that VW in Germany are amazed (heard that yesterday). The wait is total HELL!!!!
Yahoo
Essential options are as follows: - Rear parking sensor (just sensible I suppose) - 18" Monza's (visually transform the car) - Arm Rest - DSG (especially for stop-start driving), now includes paddles - Higline Computer I also went for leather (worth it just for the heated seats in the winter) and folding wing mirrors. Folding wing mirrors are cheap enough, but don't fold back far. Multi function steering wheel is a luxury and includes cruise control - I had to get it with my '05 GTI as it was the only way of getting DSG paddles. The only option that I wish I had was the highline computer, a bargain at £60 ish - looks good and has some useful features. Xenons and Sat Nav seem overpriced, I would steer clear. Simonl
Wouldn't bother with leather mate, or parking sensors. IMO a novelty. Intergalos is nostalgic and will be as sought after as Leather on resale. 18"s Definately Highline CPU (can't go wrong for 40 sheets) DSG, worth it if it rocks your boat. Arm rest, yep, asthetically much better. I've heard the stereo sucks so you might want to consider the sound pack too. But for resale, the more basic the better for you IMO. mu71rd
can someone explain what exactly the highline computer is?! as i've just found out that my build isn't until October (!), I'm thinking I might be able to add it. are there any pictures of where it goes, and can anyone tell me what it does? chriswastle
Agree with Leman on this 1. Without armrest the car looks bare 2. 18s awesome 3. Highline computer allows you adjust loads of stuff ( wish i had it) 4. But the stereo is fine in my opinion. The car is too noisy to warrant spending any money to make it better. 5. DSG(paddles now free) is fab. Any thing else is if its your thing, but watch the price...!
chriswastle
As for the highline, have a look on here its been covered. Basically its a larger screen depicting the car, and it allows you to adjust the timing of lights and the such, I dont have it like i said but i am sure someone else can help. WhiteHArtMart
Thanks guys - guess the spec I'll settle for will be something like this:- 18s Highline Armrest DSG Might get the winter pack and also the parking sensors though (just for when the wife drives the car!!!). Another Test Drive first though - price of car is getting periously close to an Evo VIII or Scooby now!! Although I guess it'll be cheaper to run! Also - have to mention it - the Focus ST looks quite nice (not in orange though) - but then again having owned a ST 170 I know how bad the depreciation wouold be even though its £2k cheaper! Thanks for the tips again!
gregd
I'm in the same boat as you WHM.. Been procrastinating over a GTI purchase for about 3 months. Keep changing my mind about colour (silver or black). Was set on 18's, armrest, highline and leather but after all the rave DSG reviews on here I'm considering dropping leather for DSG. Also keep having unholy thoughts about going for a Porsche instead (2nd hand early Boxster S or LHD 996 911!).
Simonl
If you buy a porsche greg, you have to be able to afford the up keep. No Warranty etc... ouch!
gregd
I know, that's what I keep telling myself. Still tempting though
RedRobin
It's quite amazing that someone would be considering a choice between the Porsche and the GTI....They seem so different to me. Both great cars and both fun etc but quite different in what they offer. Like you greg, I chose to drop leather for DSG (which is the best of both worlds plus with so many drive options). ChalkyWhite
ChrisGTI, I agree about the stereo. I'm used to a Philips headunit in my MGF with only 2 speakers, as I'm too busy enjoying the sound of the car than my selection of music. Perhaps Top Gear should scrap the "best driving tunes" gig and hold a "best car noise"? The new M5 sounded sweet the other day.
Melchior
There was a chap part exchanging a very tidy looking Porsche 993 for a Golf Gti at one of the dealers I visited. The extra's I have specced are: Side airbags Winter pack DSG Parking Sensors RCD500 + Soundpack Armrest Cruise Control I'm sticking to the 17's and no Highline IMHO the standard car car is the fine in terms of spec. It sounds like the centre armrest is a popular addition but the options are there for individuals to tailor their cars to how they want them. I've added the extras for a variety of reasons but I wouldn't describe any of the options as a must have. It should be about how 'you' want your car to be IMHO. simkna
TBH, I think the price of the leather option is outrageous, especially since most of it is leatherette!! Much better off spending the money on DSG, and then getting a half-leather re-trim done later. Should look great with the check cloth centres, and will probably work out cheaper. Si. lagrian
I agree its expensive but its not just leather. Leather & Leatherette in places. Electric Lumber support. Heated Seats. Okay I have leather so I'm probably biased but I sat in a cloth one the other day and its just feels like a lower class of car. If I had the choice again I would still go for leather, it's fairly good leather too alot better than some cars.
RedRobin
Hi lagrian....I heard leather on the GTI was slippy on the seats....No?

CRJ_1
Hi Red, I too have the leather option and there's no slippin - not sure whether this will change with age? IMO it just feels nicer that the cloth, gets a bit warm but otherwise great. If I did it all again I think I'd still go for leather........also looking forward to the heated seats in the winter
