adamchahl
Morning, Does anyone know what relay the glow plugs use on my 1999 GT TDI? I am having an intermittant fault with them not coming on upon ignition, i suspect this may be at fault. Thanks in advance
Rustynuts
Morning Adam. I presume your GT TDI has a 110 bhp engine has it? Or is it a 115 PD? Not that it really matters too much, just curious. When you say the glowplugs don't come on, what exactly do you mean. Here's some scenario's. 1. The glowplug light doesn't come on but the car starts. 2. The light doesn't come on and the car won't start. 3. The light comes on but there's no power to the glow plugs (I've checked with a volt meter etc.) and the car won't start. 4. The light comes on but there's no power to the glow plugs (I've checked with a volt meter etc.) but the car starts. 5. The glowplugs aren't the problem, it just won't start very well when the engine's cold / hot. Remember, it has to be below 9 degrees c. before the glow plugs activate, even though the light comes on for a second.
adamchahl
Hey, thanks for the response, the light doesnt come on, the engine just turns over. If the ignition key is turned on and off several times, then the light comes on and we're away! Which is what made me initially suspect a relay problem. its a 110bhp does this help? Rustynuts
Oh, yes indeed. Relay 109. That's your problem. Find the relay box under the dash, (I'm not going to tell you where it is, you're not that daft are you?) and look for this relay. It may look like 601 if it's upside down. I bet it's a black one, and the new upgraded relay is grey. Get one from the dealers, replace it yourself, and enjoy driving. Do it sooner rather than later, 'cos when this relay does give up, you might be doing 70 in the fast lane, and come to a dead halt. Some aftermarket manufacturers are now making this item, and theirs are black aswell, but I'd get a grey one from the dealer, then there's no confusion.
