Soapsuds
Hi all - have tried searching, but cannot find an answer! This evening when i got home my A4 wouldnt lock - it has been working just fine recently with excellent range etc, so thought it was strange. Anyway, i took it apart to find the battery to replace, but NO BATTERY!!! Strange design! Does anyone know if there is a small replaceable battery hidden in the fob and if so how can i replace it. I am running on the spare fob at present, but this will also go soon no doubt! Help me avoid a stealer trip! Thanks in advance!
Avus_Bub
No battery?! If you lever the remote apart you're left with the flip key part and the remote part. You lever the remote apart (gently) and the battery's in there. Then you have to re-sync the key . It's in the handbook Good luck BUB

DHA
My key fobs play up all the time on my B7.
Sparky
If you press the unlock/lock keys too many times when out of range, it will un-sync the key and the car. There is a procedure to teach it again, but I found the buttons on my fobs were getting knocked too many times. Either that or it's the battery. Try holding the fob to your chin and pressing it. If the battery is weak, this trick helps.
Sven
Here's the procedure for the recoding. It's for an A8, but it should be the same. To increase the range of the fob there's apparently a way to 're-route' the antenna. Check the same site - audipages.com - IIRC there's a how-to on there. Again for the 8, but it should point you in the right direction. Tip: reprogram your central locking device to 'beep when lock' (with VAG-COM). You'll always be sure it locks w/o having to watch the blinkers. Note: if your car refuses to lock or set the alarm there may be one door/lid ajar. I've experienced this when GF didn't properly close the boot. Hardly visible, but the car refused to set the alarm. W/o the 'beep' set to confirm this it's not that hard to miss, resulting in an un-armed or even unlocked car.
Milo
[ QUOTE ] My key fobs play up all the time on my B7. [/ QUOTE ] Is this not a known problem? I seem to recall a thread on it a while back - Audi were aware there was an issue with "a small number" of A4s.

pcz14
Hi I am a newbie here so bear with me. I have a 1997 R Avant. The key fobs have had the batteries tested and they are working fine. I have tried taking the car to Audi fro reprogramming and this failed. I have tried all the recoding procedures and the lights do not flash or beep. I have seen about reseating a fuse but I do not have a fuse diagram to be able to do this. Audi have quoted the following WE NEED TO SPEND 1.0 TO FIND THE FAULT. THE COST OF THAT WILL BE £105.75 INC. IT IS POSSIBLE IT MAY NEED A CENTRAL LOCKING PUMP. LABOUR = £180.00 + VAT PART = £290.36 + VAT Does this make sense given the car locks from central locking manually ? Can anyone help
Sparky
Hi Newauid. Welcome to TSN It's unlikely that you need a new pump, if you can lock the entire car with the key manually in the door. Testing a battery does not really mean they are good batteries. It simply means the voltage may be at 3v or not. I would suggest getting a new battery regardless first. At the worst case scenario, this isn't an expensive test. Have you found the re-coding procedure for your car, or Audi's in general?
pcz14
Hi thanks for the reply. I will get a new battery first of all for one of the remotes as the other is brand new. I think I found the "general one" - is there a specific one for 1997 R but 1998 specs ? any help would be appreciated
Sparky
I'm not sure if there is a specific one. I know in my manual there is one, therefore I class that as specific to A4's of that age. Are you 100% sure followed the procedure correctly (just asking!) ? How did they test the batteries?
bearra
Hi NewAudi You know when it's the pump, it sounds weak and slow and doesn't manage to lock/unlock all the doors. Hope the battery fixs it
pcz14
I have tried with both keys and to the letter - there is no beep or horn whatsoever or sign of life. I have also done the reset after a new battery one as well and followed the manual. when the tested the abtteries they put them in a machine - but could not see anything else - sorry I am so frustrated
Sparky
I was told by the dealer that you can only re-code so many times before a technician has to perform it. Not sure if this was dealer speaking as usual. Have you considered calling out Audi Assist? They are often better than visiting a dealer!
pcz14
I have now got new batteries in the old fob and tried again - it is exactly the same. With Audi Assist is their a limit on age of car - I have just purchased this one - with FSH but not from an Audi dealer - thanks again
bearra
In that case take it back and get it fixed under your statutory rights for free.
pcz14
Is it worth resetting the fuses ? Has anyone else done this ? Does anyone have a diagram ?
