BMW 645Ci - Petrol consumption

BMW are doing themselves a diservice. The fuel consumption on my 645 is incredible - as in surprisingly good. It's fair to say that with less than 1,000 miles on the clock the engine is still tight and I'm sure it'll improve further too.

However, it's averaging 22.7 - only 1.2 miles per gallon less then the M3 did. That's quite staggering. The runs it has been on are not totally comparable but individual readings taken on the second mpg count on the car has shown the average to be 22.3 on what could be classed as urban travel.

The figures BMW show are less than this - quite a bit less too. I gave it a fair amount of stick around a few country lanes earlier today too, in Drive Sport mode with with Sport button engaged too, and yet it's still recorded 20.7 mpg (when I say 'stick', I mean I was hoofing it....).

Possible linked Google search keywords: 95, 98, RON, octane, petrol, combined, cycle, ci, convertible, coupe, optimax, ultimate, bp, shell, tank, capacity.

I'm very surprised at that. Every BMW I/or the wife have ever had has returned MUCH better fuel economy than their combined figures state.

Mine certainly aren't driven gently either, and she's not the most conservative driver in the world!

You need to get the superglue off the right foot maybe? grin.gifwink.gif169144-ok.gif

I find bmw's printed fuel economy to be a little on the high side - 535d is supposed to be around the 35mpg - i'm getting 27 although I do "drive" the car smile.gif

I also found the 535d to be UNeconomical 27MPG after a week of use, put me off the car coupled to noisey engine around town. blush.gifpengy.gif

My dads friends 645 coupe is showing 17mpg on his computer.

Hmm, well my experience has been very different. Perhaps my driving cycle represents the combined cycle to perfection though because I have always hit almost exactly what they forecast in that area.

I do have a few key rules though....

1. Never accelerate HARD when the oil temp is below 70.

2. Stick to non-Sport mode unless using Manual shifting (makes a huge difference)

3. Keep a decent distance and avoid lots of braking with lots of resulting need to accelerate again afterwards - i.e smooth running instead.

Then again, every weekend, thrash the knackers off it on a country lane and ruin all your work. 169144-ok.gif

Also he says that his driving is combinded, but my old man reckons he has probably never been on single journey out of Norfolk in it! UHOH7.GIF

I saw a coupe the same colour as yours tonight, have to say I wasn't 100% confinced, but after seeing it I think it looks awesome. 169144-ok.gif

Aye, I'm pleased with the colour and I'm delighted with my choice of the Convertible.

If you didn't see the button...you wouldn't know it was a convertible from inside...oh, except when the hood is down, and oh, except for the different rear screen, oh, and except for the different headlining, oh, and ermmm.

Seriously though, I'm delighted with it.

3 months in, an M6 turned down (albeit partly to do with the wife and moving house!), and I've no intention of changing. That's a record for me....

Ive just sold an e39 540i auto (same 4.4 v8 lump in a lower state of tune) and that was very good also. 30 on a run, 22 around town. My overall average was around 27. Not bad for nearly 300 hp. The great thing about big engines is that they are so unstressed, when driven gently, they can be quite economcal. But then of course when you open them up......

That's not my understanding of the 645 V8.

The E39 540i's used an identical sized engine, but the technology within the engines is different.

E39 4398cc engines were the M62B44 lump, which I think developed 286bhp under the Bosch ME5.2 engine management system.

However, the 645 uses the engine from the 745. That is the N62B44. As you can tell by the letter suffix the engine was given a new name because I believe it used the new Valvetronic butterly system and certainly uses the new Bosch ME9.2 engine management system. The core lump might be the same but much of the components on/around it were changed.

I think the 4.4 V8 that was in the E39 540i was identical to that used in the E38 740i and the E31 840Ci. The last incarnation of it was in the E53 X5 in 1998. It was then changed slightly again when it was bored out to 4.6 litres for the 2001 X5 (putting out 347bhp by then).

Interestingly though, 1998 model engines (540i) developed 20lbs more torque than the 1996 models and at 300 revs earlier in the range (3,600 as opposed to 3,900) - and BMW didn't really publish the fact.

Well a recent software update and need to reset the service interval counter meant that the computer had to be reset (bugger!).

Since then, the car has only been out twice and one of those occasions was on the TSN/BMW Car Club run to Holy Island....and those that came back on the Northumberland Coastal Route will know we had a very 'spirited' drive back once we were clear of a coach on the back roads. It might be that certain figures of well into 3 digits were recorded on a dual carriageway coming back too. I couldn't comment on that and am just going on hearsay, of course...

So it's now showing 21.8, a drop of about a mile per gallon - which I think is actually very good considering the style of driving that has been measured on!!!!

The only complaint I have about fuel is that the tank should be bigger. It's the same as my A4 to fill up, at £60-ish, yet of course it does less than half the mileage on a full tank!

AJ, yes, saw the 645 information - thanks for that.

The consumption is very deceptive right now because I've had a week of being stuck in very heavy traffic jams (taking 90 minutes to cover a 32 mile trip every day). The average speed is showing as 26 mph so that tells you how bad it's been. On that basis, it's showing 19.7mpg right now (over a 300-400 mile range of measurement).

I know for certain it'll rise once the Christmas traffic disappears and things get back to normal, and I expect it to settle around the 22mpg mark.
