grahamb
According to the book, I have to take my A6 to the stealer for them to disable the front passenger airbag so I can fit the child seat in the front seat. Of course if I want it back on again, I have to revisit the stealer. And so on. Does anyone know what hidden switch they throw, or do they cut a wire somewhere? Maybe I could just wire in my own switch?
danax
Ive a 2000 quattro and if yours is the same, on the right hand side of the glove box (inside it), and tucked away in the back, there is a key switch which deactivates the airbag. Youll need the ignition key...
grahamb
Thanks, I'll have a look tonight.
grahamb
Nope, nothing in the glove box. Anyone else, b4 I drive it to the stealers and ask them to show me how to disable it (at cost I presume)
Sven
Mine has a key as well, but perhaps that was an option... If there's no key/lock perhaps you could ask someone with VAG-COM? Join a meet perhaps? Dunno how urgent it is, but I bet a fellow TSN member would be glad to help you in exchange for a beer.
grahamb
Seems a bit daft to have to take it to the stealers to have something like an air bag switched off. Then I need to turn it on when I have a passenger in the car, then off again when I stick the baby seat in the front. Must be hidden elsewhere. Sven
Weird that it isn't in the glove compartment... that's where they're supposed to be. I found an old cached page on the Audi site and there they also say this... As you say, there must be a way to deactivate it, unless it was optional at some models? Alternatively, get your own VAG COM. Worth the money imho.
grahamb
It could be that the switch is an option on some models. My glovebox is tiny, but I'll have another butchers tonight, just in case theres a boiled sweet stuck in the way. Sven, where do I get a VAG-COM from? Whats the going price? peterb
It seems that some passenger airbags are disabled by use of a 'resistive plug' and others can only be disabled through the diagnostics (VAG-COM).
Edd_W
The switch to disable the air-bag was an extra cost option. My 2.7 has it but my wife's 2.8 does not. There also is an extra warning light up by the sunroof switch to show it is disabled. The important thing is that we are potentially talking about a deadly situation here. In my opinion, there are only two ways of dealing with this - 1. Go to the dealer and have them disable it properly - you cannot just start cutting wires and putting in a switch because you will get the air-bag warning on the dash, that will then fail the MOT test. 2. Do not risk putting the baby seat in the front. It will be for a very short period of time anyway and the baby is safer in the back anyway because the rear is a safer place to be regardless of air-bags etc... If you risk putting your baby in the front without being absolutely certain the air-bag has been disabled then you should be shot. If it went off for any reason it will break your babies neck, no question. This cannot be stated in strongly enough, sorry if I have not got my point across clearly. grahamb
You're right Edd. How can I be 100% sure that Audi has actually turned the air bags off? And what about the curtain bag and the one in the seat? Wont they also fire? I'll keep the ankle biter in the back.
