andyf
I just picked up my first R32, actually first vw, on friday. Bought the car from a small dealer about 120 miles away obviously with next to no fuel in it. Filled the car up and used 1/4 tank on the way home which I thought was quiet a lot but after owning a cossie for 3 years not bad. Anyway, filled the car up this morning and went to work. I took the car out a couple of times in the day and there was a slight smell of fuel but didnt really think that much of it. By the time i got home I had used 1/8 tank of fuel in 35 miles and the smell was getting bad. Looked under the car and there was a pretty serious leak at the rear I guess coming from the fuel tank. Has anyone had this before as I took it straight to a main dealer to get looked at and want to know that they are going to bullshit me with a answer to the problem. Smudge
Hi Andy, and welcome to TsN. Sorry to hear the news mate, what a right PITA. I'm not aware of anyone else having had a petrl leak, but I'm sure if we've had one on here someone will remember. Did you get the car from a VW dealer? If so, the car should be sorted at no cost to you as you've had it within their (VW's) 30 day no quible blah blah. Fingers crossed. Oh, and don't forget to insist on having the car back with at least a tank full of petrol. Perhaps a call to VW CS might help the cause. In fact, hopefully the car did come from a VW Dealer, if it did, call VW assist. They will recover the car asap, and you should have it back before you know it. Fingers crossed. Calm Chris
I'd check the fuel line. Tank leak is only likely if you've doen some serious driving on heavy gravel roads and a stone has caused the damage. 35 miles on 1/8 th tank is spot on for 240-280 avarage tank range, so not too sure if your leak measurement makes it a serious leak. Any vessel punctured that holds a liquid will have a leak line, the point where it doesn't leak. If you do find a hole some expoxy mix putty / hardner (petroil proof) could be used as a temp plaster! Good luck, and sorry you've caught a cold so early in the R32 owning game. Get it sorted and enjoy the car.
andyf
Turned out to be an oil pump seal which they are fixing tomorrow as they have the seal in stock but need a new bolt which they dont have in stock???, ie cant get it fixed today as to much work on no doubt. I didnt get the car from a main dealer but its still got over a years warrenty on it so should be ok.
Smudge
Good news Andy. Back in time for the weekend then!!
Calm Chris
Great news, sorted under warranty and introduced the car to the main VW dealer. Ask them to check the 6463 software, if your unsure if it's had the hesitation problem re-map. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Enjoy.......... R32North
I had a timing chain seal leak....... not a bad leak but a drip of oil on the drive every other day. All sorted under warranty (a few months ago now).
FiftyPence
Im worried that when my R goes in for her service on Thursday that it wont be covered under warranty because of the mods
Calm Chris
50p only mods that affect a warranty claim will be outside warranty. How are you getting it to the garage?
FiftyPence
Im getting a local recovery firm to trailer it up there on Wednesday afternoon Also, the guy at VW understandably said they couldnt fit my coilovers as that would void the warranty so the installation of those will take place at another VW specialist and then next time she goes in for a service at the official VW garage it should go under the techies scanners
andyf
chri5, I've seen some posts on here about the 6463 software but i'm still not 100% sure about it all. Do I need it on a 2004 car or should it have the most up to date software. Also, the last owner hed the MAF sensor replaced but I think the car is reving too low on idle approx 650 rpm, could this be the sensor or another problem as surley it should be higher. R32Ash
Not sure about the MAF and your engine idle speed, but as for 6463, no R32s had the software update from new. So if it hasn't been done during a visit to the stealer, it doesn't have 6463.
andyf
I've got the car booked in to check on the idle and have the software updated. i've not had the car long enough to decide if there is a hesitation problem but i'll get it done anyway. Dr_Watson
Im just back from Zurich, caught in some traffic, sitting looking at the rev counter and then I remembered your post. Mine revs at around 650 to 675 (about 1mm difference in needle movement) so I think yours is just fine
