newblackGTi
Nutkins - i haven't noticed any real difference in fuel consumption - its certainly no worse any way... it actually drives very similarly to before but with just more go in each gear... if you look at the new to old torque curve on superchips website you can see that the curve is pretty much the same - just bigger!! AndyW - My GTi is an April 05 model so you have to drill out the locator bolts to remove the ECU. Sounds worrying I know... but the fella have a box full of replacement VW locator bolts, hoovered up any shavings etc - you would honestly never know anything had ever been moved at all... he said he had done so many golfs he could do it now in less than an hour... Apparently its only Golfs coming through now that have a serial port to plug a laptop into. regarding the dealer finding out - i had a 330d beemer before with a superchip, that had to go in for various warranty work while i had, with the stealer plugging their computers in on various occasions but they never mentioned anything... i really think it was £500 well spent... it's good fun! Simonl
newblack, do you disclose it to your insurance company... they might not look at it so leniently if you stacked it!
RedRobin
Yes, but would the insurance company know? I guess it would depend on the repair shop or appointed assessor the car was inspected by. If you kept quiet you'd save on your premiums but have to shell out the £500 again to chip again (if engine damaged). Then again you might be paying a large excess anyway. The whole game gets complicated so my advice would be to come clean - Insurance companies network info about people who tell them porkies if only to stop you from being accepted elsewhere and then stealing more of your money by obliging you to stay with them. 7MAT
[ QUOTE ] newblack, do you disclose it to your insurance company... they might not look at it so leniently if you stacked it! [/ QUOTE ] I've never ever heard of a case where an insurance company has declined to payout on a modified ECU. I used to own an old E36 M3 which was completely modified with Unichip, Exhaust, shocks, springs, spoiler etc. None of which was disclosed. I was involved in a accident where the insurance company sent out a guy to check the car over and he signed off the work no problem. That's not to say I would recommend not telling your insurance company. My current car is modified and there was no extra premium to pay when I told them. 7MAT
RedRobin
Lucky you! DirectLine upped my premium by £40 for an increase of only 10bhp. They stated that the next threshold was a 10% increase in the car's standard power.
newblackGTi
RE - telling insurance company... Its my wifes car.... I haven't got round to telling her about it let alone the insurance company... Without wanting to tempt fate though... i stacked the old 330d (with chip) into an old Volvo one night (writing off the Volvo) not a dicky bird from the insurance company... YES- I know.... should call them really................

She must think that Golfs are incredibly powerful! I bet she's thrilled though - Either that or scared sh*t-less!!
newblackGTi
She hardly ever drives it... I enjoy driving it so much she bimbles round in my car....
RedRobin
Tee Hee I don't quite know why but the idea of this really tickles me! With that much power, unless she's a "driver", it's no wonder she hardly ever drives it!! It has been my experience that if a lady is a very good driver she's usually seriously very very good. newblackGTi
I don't really think my wife is really into driving! She would have had a golf diesel! She only likes driving my car because its an auto and has more parking sensors than you can shake a stick at!
