Microsoft Word file management problem

Would be very grateful for any ideas. My Office installation works fine except for one thing - whenever I ask it to find a place to save or find files, it goes into a flat spin.

The problem seems to be specifically with updating its list of folders and files on the HDD - i.e. if I simply tell it to save, it's fine, but if I use "save as.." or "open..." it opens the default folder quite happily, but the minute I try to use the drop-down folder list or just go up one folder level (any of the buttons along the top bar of the "save as..." window) it whirs away for up to 2 or 3 minutes before populating the folder list.

The same happens if I use the buttons down the side to tell it to go to Desktop, or My Computer, etc. It seems unable to shift its save location without going through some lengthy scan of the entire hard drive each time.

Once it's there and I've successfully told it where to go, it works fine from then on.
