Simonl
No real rules man, just go easy for 500 miles or so. Demos get thrashed from day one, so don't worry. Good news on the new motor mate! bet you're having plenty of sleepless nights!
Booster
Good choice of motor Bit of a controversial subject this: Some say take it easy for 1000 miles others say rag it out of the showroom! I always keep the revs low (ish) for the first 500 and then increase them from there.
fingermouse
with the modern oils does anyone think that a new engine really gets run in ???? ive seen some oil especially for running in new engines for say 1-2k then they say to change to synth after that. Could this be a reason for the S3 using a little oil ????
CarMad
Take it easy for the first 500miles. Then start to extend it more by labouring and reving the engine a little from time to time. Until at 1000 ish miles you can start to really put your foot down and enjoy it. Vic
Some sound advice here http://www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/1,2,12,15,22,25,26,27,3/Number/535722/an/0/page/15#535722 makes good technical sense.
Gren
Just finished 'running in ' ours. According to the manual, first 1,00km (600 miles) don't go above (I think) two thirds of maximum speed and don't go near the red line and be careful with changing gears too much. Next 400 miles gradually increase. Going up to York tomorrow and the missu hs insisted I drive. Time for a road test methinks!
RedRobin
It will probably state quite clearly in the car's handbook. For the VW Mk5 GTI which has the 2.0 FSI Turbo engine it advises taking it easy for first 1,000 miles / 1,500 km. Do you A3 guys have similar engines? Hey, what the heck am I doing in here - I got plenty to do!

whisky
Running In I thought the engine was run in a block at the factory for about 1k then put in the car! Taking it easy I understood the idea of 'taking it easy' was because the engine has never had the weight of the vehicle to pull...
Gren
Don't forget you also need to go easy with new tyres and brakes
