My wife works for a fragrance company. They do stuff from perfumes to air fresheners and household products.

A couple of years ago they were asked by a major manufacturer of "quality" automobiles to come up with a "new car" smell to be sprayed into cars at the factory. Apparently, new cars were no longer smelling like "new cars". They either smelt of very little or of a WW1 trench after a mustard gas attack.

They also make a "leather" smell. This goes into cars with leather seats (obviously), but also into leather cleaning products. The leather smell diffuses a little after application so that the punter can stroke his ego and justify the extra £k's he spent for the privilege of sitting on some poor old cow.
