meriafel
Oil Filter Tool to remove TDi 130 Bhp filter housing on my 52 Passat. Can anyone recommend an on-line tool supplier? Don't want to risk cracking the plastic top with a chain wrench or tourniquet. Thanks.
Wobby
Just break it off... you can always buy another one I tried a strap wrench (broke the wrench), then a chain wrench that wouldn't grip, used a differant chain wrench and got it off!! Dont know why it was on so tight. I have done filter myself every 10k since and its come off easily. Doesn't need to be on tight, just remember to change the 'O' rings as well. meriafel
We are a 75 mile round trip from our nearest VW dealer in Aberystwyth so am trying to avoid breaking it! As you have said a chain wrench skids off the strap wrench would crush it as it often does with the earlier metal canister filter, so I need to buy a quality metal tool that doesn't 'crush' to get a grip. Preferably one that can be used with a quarter inch drive. Thanks.
mulkbear
You can buy them from VW around £10 fits on to a 1/2 inch drive tho
Wobby
Is it a strap wrench that fits onto a 1/2 inch drive? I had one of these and it didn't work. A chain wrench got mine off in the end. It was on very tight, was a worrying time hoping not to break anything.
ktuludays
Halfords sell a tool that looks a bit like a claw that connects to a wrench. It simply tightens around the filter as you turn it and hey presto!! job done.

gazthecab
I was going to post a photo but it cam e up as just an attachment, when I find out how to "photo post" I'll stick a couple of photos on of filter wrenches, failing that check out ebay there are several different types on there. meriafel
Thanks guys but I still haven't tracked down the tool I need. I don't want any tool that squashes the plastic case as it grips. I need a large scket of some type. Two VW agents I have called do not sell any tools or even list any tools. Would appreciate further info. There used to be a firm that specialised in just VW tools for air and water-cooled vehicles. Anyone know if they are still in business? gazthecab
Check out www.snapon.com I think you'll find what you are looking for there. About £10. Go to site and ......U.K.....LUBRICATION.....OIL FILTER......OIL FILTER WRENCH. You will need to measure diameter and count number of flats on filter housing. Please let us know which one is applicable.
meriafel
Thanks gazthecab. Looks to be just what I need on the snap-on site. Will measure up over the weekend and get one ordered and post the size on the site. Price seems reasonable for Snap-on quality. My wifes 98 Passat can be difficult to remove even though I only do it hand tight, yet the 1Z transverse engines in the kidz Golf and Passat Est. can always be undone by hand. Perhaps the canister oil filter on these transverse engines runs cooler so they don't 'cook' themselves on!
jonboy3020
its part no. 3417, go into any vag dealers and they can order you one, some dont like doing it as there is no mark up on them, if they say they cant, its complete twaddle
gazthecab
According to TDI club forum it is 76mm with 14 flutes which makes it Snap on part number FW7614 priced at £8.
meriafel
Thanks for the last two posts. The filter tool is 76mm with 14 flutes and SnapOn do one as you describe. As I was not sure when the SnapOn van next calls at my local garage I thought for the hell of it I would put VW to the test. I phoned my usual VW dealer (who had already said it wasn't possible to buy tools) and quoted jonboy's post! The dealer said when they tried to order tools for customers they had had their 'knuckles rapped by VW'! They could order one making out it was for their own workshop, as they had to state it's use, but would prefer not to as it was underhand. They had no objection to my raising the issue with Milton Keynes which I promptly did! There was much checking between the Customer Services personel and the verdict was that there was no problem with me ordering the part from my dealer and if I experienced any problem it was suggested that the dealer contact Cust Serv. either by phone or by the usual methods. So there you have it, its official, you can buy this tool from VW as jonboy correctly said. Mine is ordered and arrives on Thursday. If the tool wasn't generally available from such suppliers as SnapOn I doubt whether VW would supply one, so don't expect to be able to buy a 'VW only' tool as they clearly want to make it as difficult as possible for both owners and independant dealers to repair VW's. Thanks guys for your posts.
jonboy3020
You wanna try buying a vas 5051, lol On another note, any probs getting hold of the correct tools for these vehicles, just ask, I have pretty much most of them, and most work better than the snap on alternative (eg: caliper wind back tools)
