Ari
I was cruising home late noe night and stopped at the lighrts I noticed a highly modified Toyota Supra going the other way. Ha, chav, I thought. But then it dawned on me. The car was absolutely immaculate, the mods were beautifully executed, there was no bass thump eminating from it and the driver was not wearing a baseball cap. And I realised that, whilst there is inevitably some crossover, in fact chavs and boy racers are not actually the same thing. Whilst I'm not a huge fan of the Fast and Furous look, these cars are generally clearly loved and cared for by genuinely enthusiastic owners. Mods are mainly performance orientated and even the "for show" mods are performance based (big wheels with low profile tyres, spoilers, graphics, etc). Chav cars tend to be Novas and Saxos with stupid and usually badly fitted mods like horrendous bodykits, massive exhausts, big bass speakers, etc. They're actually two different breeds, and whilst I couldn't ever see myself in the Boyracer catagory, I can see what they're at and to a degree, understand it. They're modding their cars cos they appreciate them, not just to show off to their mates and in the (foolish) beleif that it'll pull birds. Now, where are my neons... NewNiceMrMe
Nah, sorry, to me, they're Chavs. He was probably on his last 3 drops of fuel.
MOSE
It is a foolish belief that they will pull birds with those cars Ari, the only birds they will be pulling will be the unforunate unsuspecting sparrow or pigeon that got sucked into one of the air intakes. Point taken about the difference though. I mentioned in the other thread of the A3 going about the place and it looks like it has had an absolute mint spenton it, without going too OTT and making it look like something completely different. Quality paintwork as well, so naturally someone that cares a lot about the car. Chavs on the other hand will drive about fully conscious that there rear wing is hanging off, or one of the sideskirts is held on with a lump of bluetac, but they cant really do anything about it mate until they have at least bought back the Sovereign ring they pawned for the bodykit in the first place. NewNiceMrMe
See, if it had been a mint STANDARD Supra, then it'd be a different matter altogether. However, with any modification (particularly body) at all they just look about as Chav-ish as Chav can be in my opinion.
JamesB
Or one like I saw the other day (excuse the grammar, I must have been in shock still) I have to say I don't use the term 'chav' much except in the context of chavving up a car. My experience is that pretty much every car that has a load of modifications purely designed to make it look and sound different (as opposed to perform better) is driven in boy racer fashion. So maybe one is a subset of the other?
v15ben
Surely chavs are the ones who put drainpipe exhausts and huge spoilers onto non-performance orientated cars in an attempt to look cool and end up making the car and themselves look stupid. I do not believe personally that Fast and Furious style cars like the high performance Supra in this thread are Chav cars. It is a different way of getting performance and thrills from a car - not a beautifully crafted Ferrari or suave 645 Cab but the car of the playstation generation. Sure there will be some chavs who will buy the likes of Imprezas, Supras and such cars and modify them with all horrid things that are truly chav. However cars like the Supe and Impreza, no matter their reputation will have at least some element of the owners who are car enthusiasts like you and I. Personally I enjoy seeing a well-modded Jap rocket!

I have got to say after going to a cruise it the people with naff taste in mods that seem to be chavs. There were some very nice cars all very clean and driven by normal people. Who have put a lot of money into there cars and take a lot of care of them.

[/ QUOTE ] Ah no, see, I have to exclude you on a number of points: 1 - I've seen the car in the flesh of course 2 - It's more of a 'specialist' car than it is a modded car 3 - Toby is a posh name and not a Chavs name There, cleared.
