gti3121
I've just bought a Polo GTI (2001) and am having a bit of trouble with the Climatronic system! Being a girl probably doesn't help! I am convinced I have managed to have the air con on constantly, thats why it's drinking so much petrol. Please can someone tell me how I just use the normal heater/blower without the air con?? The VW manual makes no sense at all!!
NunchukHamster
I don't think you can. If you set it to ECON I think that has the effect of switching off the compressor. Then you just select the fan speed with the + - keys, or switch the whole lot off.
pritesh
I'll second that....but from experience the climate control system has little impact on fuel consumption! ...it really all goes on how heavy your right foot is....as an indication my 1.8T 20V sport Passat gives me over 35MPG and I have my climate control on all the time! ....so message is really to drive with a light right foot. pingpongpo
I get better consumption when the climate control is working harder in the summer. Must be due to the higher air intake temperature but still get better mpg than in winter. Mines switched on Auto all the time/.
gti3121
So would you suggest I keep it switched on the Auto setting or the E-con setting all the time??
pritesh
I would leave it on Auto, but one thing you have not mentioned GTi121 is the type of driving you do? town? motorway? or a mix?
pritesh
I guess MPG is better during the winter as the air is colder and engines prefer to have colder air as it runns a lot better.
gti3121
I mainly do town driving, so still do you think it's best to leave it on auto??
pingpongpo
At the end of the day, it all depends on how you're feeling. I have mine on all the time as I don't think it makes much difference to my MPG (I've got a diesel so I don't know if because of the extra torque it doesn't affect the MPG so much compared to a petrol engine?) If you feel you get far better MPG without it on and the conditions in the car are ok (Ie. not in the middle of summer) then leave it off, however as a word of caution, I believe that the seals are prone to drying out and failing if the air-con isn't used for long periods of time. Sometimes I like the window open so I will switch it off though as its pointless having the aircon trying to cool the atomsphere!!
pingpongpo
Lets also not forget the demisting qualities of Air-conditioning. Good to have it on if its raining. Keeps the windows nice and clear.
pritesh
Gti3121, the fact that you do TOWN driving says it all...you are not going to avergae more than 30 at best! regardless of how you drive, town driving involves alot of start stop, gear change etc. its no supprise that you dont get high mpg. if u were on the motorway everyday (like many of us) you would see mid-30s. So you can just leave urs on Auto if u wish. I know for a fact that if i use my passat in the town i get about 20pmg but on the motorway i get between 35-38mpg! Humpty
Putting it on ECON switches off the compressor. So just dump it on econ and set the fan speed to your choice. Its quite easy to see the effect air-con has on fuel consumption. 2 examples. When my passat is idling, the fuel consumption reads about 1.4-1.5 litre/hour (on the multi function display). Once the air-con is on, it drops to 1.8-1.9 litres/hour. With the cruise control set at 80kph on a straight stretch, I saw readings of 5.9-6.1 litres/100km. Switch on the aircon and the readings go up to 6.6/6.9 litres/100km. So air-con saps about 10% more fuel or thereabouts. Try it and see for yourself. You'll need both the MFD and to a lesser extent the cruise control present for accurate results though.
