What would you buy for £30k?

As a matter of interest why are you so keen on a 4x4??

This is not meant to be a dig at people who have and love 4x4's, I couldn't give a monkeys if you drove around in a Humvee. But I don't see why you would buy something that is unduly heavy, generally slow, thirsty, unweildy, ugly (in my eyes), and expensive?

Nothing wrong with a Lexus. Lexus cred is on the up, especially with the new designs hitting us now and soon - the new GS, the new IS, a whole design philosophy that solves the only problem Lexus had - dull design.

There's a hybrid GS saloon coming out next year. 340bhp, at least the torque of a diesel, and over 30mpg everywhere.

A Lexus is a great car and now a marque in its own right in every market.

They are very well built and the service is fantastic compared to most VW / Audi and Merc. I think they have a great image that you aren't following the crowd and have a fantastic car to boot. Laugh all you like am sure they are laughing at those that spend ££kkk more on alternatives to get an inferiour worse spec'ed car. Only my opinion from having one previously anyway. coffee.gifgrin.gif

I had exactly the same dilemma and bought an A6 3.0tdi quattro.

My unofficial shortlist contained:

530d (E60)

RX330/400h

Touareg

E-class

ML270

X5

Volvo XC90

A4 3.0 TDI

I ruled out the 530d because it was 2 wheel drive, i live in the country and I know i'd spend 2 months worrying about the weather with 2 wheel drive. If you aren't bothered on 2 or 4 wheel drive then it's a good car, i'd still get the A6 on looks but that's a subjective argument.

I ruled out the Lexus RX because I didn't like the layout inside and I think it's a bit of a Chelsea wives car rather than a man's car.

I was tempted by the Touareg but both the 2.5 and 3.0 tdi are thirsty moving it about, plus the 3.0 is over the 30k mark by quite a bit, not to mention the performance being not exactly blistering.

I didn't even consider the e-class because it is a taxi driver's car and again 2 wheel drive.

Merc ML - ime has a tragic build quality and will haemorrhage cash when the new model becomes readily available.

X5 - great car and I do quite like them, but again new model next year and i'm not so sure they hold their money as well as people think, my dad changed his after 30 months and had to give the dealers 13K plus his old one with 24k miles, same model although new one has sat nav and heated seats.

Volvo – sorry just don’t like the look of the XC90.

A4 or A6 – I got the chance of a year old A6 for good money and as an added bonus it was fully loaded ,and the A6 is less rep mobile than the A4.

As with most things about cars it’s a subjective choice and if wasn’t for family I’d have bought 996 or 987, but ultimately it’s your money and your choice. SMOKE6.GIF

I considered everything and like Pidge the A6 3.0TDI was the only one that ticked all the boxes. Not the most exciting perhaps, but a mighty fine ownership experience.

Now its loosened up i can get 40mpg on a run which is pretty good for an 1800kg 4wd 150mph vehicle. I will be posting a 12 month review in the next few days.

Howdy dudes - you'll be plerased to know I have stayed away from the perils of 4 X 4 (thought I'd bide my time until the Lexus Hybrid comes down in price on the 2nd hand market....) until I saw a 54-plate (had to go and ask!) M3 convertible in silver for £29,995 at the Aston Garage in Wilsmlow...parked next to an SMG M3 and in front of a 360 Modena for £70k!!!

Sort of put things in perspetive but what a stunning car for £30k but then again petrol is going to be difficult to justify....the search keeps on going!!!

Absobl@@dylutely. I couldn't agree more. The 3.0 l TDi is the creme de la creme on the new A6 body is the best you can have. 169144-ok.gif
