Frodo
Temporarily turn off the firewall in Windows XP, look under the network interface. Otherwise you could try a telnet on the port that VNC uses through the firewall. You say you have NAT enabled, are the workstations using DHCP or static addresses? skifly
presume you are using a lappy - if so then you need to make sure that the lappy always gets the same ip. I think i probably have the same router as you and what you can do is set the ip to be reserved (think thats what its called in the router setup). That was the problem with my VNC connection as the router was pointing the port to a non-existent pc.

skifly
very odd as i have had vnc running on my home machine for nearly 3 years now without any issues at all besides the usual "user" errors!
Gaunty
Is VNC conflicting with Remote Desktop? Try turning the remote desktop service off.

Gaunty
What else is running on 3389 then? Do netstat -a -b from your command prompt and look at port 3389, here's mine for comparison, I have RDP turned on. Code:

C:\>netstat -a -b TCP prof-farnsworth:3389 prof-farnsworth:0 LISTENING 936 -- unknown component(s) -- C:\WINDOWS\system32\RPCRT4.dll c:\windows\system32\rpcss.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ADVAPI32.dll [svchost.exe]
