rowley
Anyone know if the IPOD fit for the VW Golf will display the track names on the head unit? Also has anyone in the UK been able to spec it yet? I went into the dealer the other day and he looked completely blank when I asked if I could add it to my current order.... Cheers! matprot
Since all factory head units DO NOT support CD Text, it will not display track names. Cheers
7MAT
I spoke to VW customer services two weeks ago, chasing the Recaro seat option for the GTI. The lady I spoke to confirmed that the next option to be made available was going to be the ipod connection. I think she said it could be as early as January - still no news on the seats though! 7MAT
DB6Vantage
[ QUOTE ] Since all factory head units DO NOT support CD Text, it will not display track names [/ QUOTE ] ...er...what is the point of it then? So if I would have 9873 songs on my iPod, it would display: now playing 2031 of 9873??? I should be getting my car round by the end of the month, with iPod prep, will let you know how it is, unless someone else gets that before me? RedRobin
Hi 7MAT, I can't see you using your Audi A3 much after you get your GTI, especially as you are already used to DSG and assuming your GTI will be DSG. Which Recaros are those? Like in the Mk5 R32?
RedRobin
Yassou Matthew! I hope you are wrong about the new VW supplied iPod compatibility and I think that as long as the track names are on the iPod (they wouldn't be on an iPod Shuffle) then they will be displayed. You are right about most other aftermarket head units.
GTiMK5
Almost certain the track names wont be shown as it is not supported. I have a dension and it does not show the track names, just a track number 1 - 99 then goes back to 1 and the factory fit option is the same as this I believe. Unless they have changed the stereo it aint going to show.
shark_90
Track names are not supported. Firstly, the Ipod isn't capable of sending the track names to the head unit. So the Ipod can't send them. Secondly, the head units are not CD Text compatible, so the head unit isn't capable of recieving the names, or displaying them. DB6Vantage - unforutnately all you'll get is track 1 - 99, then track 100 would be back to track 1.. This is due to the capability of a CD player, as you can only have 99 tracks on an audio CD. As you are fooling the head unit into thinking it is playing a CD by using an icelink etc, you have to work to the constraints of the system. After driving paddleshift (both DSG and SMG) for over three years now I really fancy having a manual again plus I also prefer SMG to DSG. The recaros are the same as the Mk5 R32 just with GTI on the headrest area. 7MAT
matprot
Did a lot of googling. No solution for song names on the headunit. Personally I am thinking to go for an aftermarket Becker or Blaupunkt, that support natively MP3 playing. Does anybody know if with an aftermarket radio, the stations are displayed in the top display (behind the wheel) ? PS. Nice greek Robin

scotw
I'm in a bit of a puzzle now, I was going to go for the iPod kit, but maybe the Phatnoise would be better ? Anyone who has either here? Care to give us your review ?

RedRobin
Hi Scott, I'm not able to offer you a meaningful review but there is one fundamental consideration imo: With a large storage device such as a Phatnoise you are effectively building/storing a potentially large music library in your car. But, presumably your 'mother' (or 'big daddy') library is at home and probably managed on a computer. The more you like and play music the more likely it is that your library is forever changing or being added to. The fundamental question is: Do you want to be managing and trying to match two separate and significantly large music libraries (when you have a Phatnoise) instead using an iPod as a smaller and very flexible transporter to your car from the single managed mothership computer library? I hope my words make sense - Please tell me if not. Regarding the fact that an iPod doesn't give your car audio system a track readout doesn't actually matter imo....Why not? Because you already know the music tracks you have loaded into your car anyway....So why does anyone need to read the names (as you drive!)? I'm not trying to influence your decision but only suggesting that you consider the master library management question. Cheers, Robin
DB6Vantage
Well if they can do it... see here. I guess its still a people's car after all But you are right Red, there isn't much point in reading the song names. You can't on a CD anyway, but it would be a nice detail... mu71rd
I agree with Red on this one. I've just actually ordered a Dension Ice kit (before my car's even arrived!). Decided that I'd rather have one device that I can organise all my music on, which I can use in my car or personally, or in a sounddock etc. Plus it looks really good I think (have a look at this link for details of how to install it) The phatnoise is great as well, but I'm not sure I could deal with the p1ss taking from my girlfriend and mates when the unit 'announces' the name track and artist details! Plus I can't imagine it will be as easy to select artists/albums using the RCD300/500 interface as it will be selecting music from the ipod itself. The best news is that I've learned that the Dension Ice system (and the phatnoise presumably too) works with an RCD500 (with soundpack in my case) in addition to the CD changer - so that's the best of both worlds. scotw
Red (and others) Thats def a consideration, two libraries may drive me spare (puns not intended). I wish I knew what "coming soon" meant, next week, month, year?
RedRobin
"coming soon" usually means it's no longer secret and is in final stages of development and will be launched when considered sufficiently problem-free enough for public consumption. DB6Vantage
That "coming soon" has been on Apple websites for a while. I ordered my GTi with the iPod option, which was available from my dealear 2 days after I went to have a first look at the car. The car will be built next week, so Im guessing the car with the iPod kit will actually be "coming soon"... Maybe the websites have not been updated ??
