nutkins
Does anyone know if the Ipod prep is specific to the OEM fit stereo? Or would it work with an aftermarket headunit? Or perhaps just an Blaupunkt aftermarket unit?
GTiMK5
I would imagine you will be able to change the HU but will also need to change the lead that connects to the back of it for one that is compatible with the new HU.
nutkins
Thanks MK5, not really worth getting if you're definitly going to change the head unit then I guess.
GTiMK5
I think VW use the dension kit. If this is the case then you have a cable from the Ipod to the Ice Link then another a cable to the HU so all you would need to do is change the one cable which will be easy to do. Whether you get the kit or not is a personal choice I guess, if it was me I think I would as I like the idea of it been located in the arm rest. I would check with the dealer that it is the dension or something similar that they do use first though as I am not 100% sure.
nutkins
Me too - that's why ideally I'd like to get it factory fitted. I could live with just changing one lead though naturally. Will try and find out if it's dension
Simonl
nutkins, I think it's a Blaupunkt one see here apparently this works with the 500, just not sure about NAV. you can see the VW HU's on this website too, just click on Original Equipment. nutkins
Cheers LeMan - I was planning on getting the Ipod prep from new for the factory finish, but swapping the headunit to Alpine or something. With the factory fit looks like you'd need to stick with Blaupaunkt, unless it's in fact the Dension VW use.
scotw
The link there shows that MP3 tags are shown on the display, which implies that unlike the Dension one, this one displays track names, can anyone confirm? I emailed vagparts to see if they had the VW part for this and they say they do £69.
Simonl
Scott, do vagparts know if it works with the NAV yet. (DVD NAV) They hadn't heard of the part the last time i checked, obviously they're a little clearer now.
Paddy_Driver
Does this help answer re DVD NAV - taken from "Technical Details" section: Compatibility "The interface is suited for Apple iPod and iPod Mini and can be connected with all Blaupunkt car radios and navigation systems with CD changer control (DMS) manufactured from 2001 onwards." Paddy_Driver
Lads, This is very informative piece of info - can I assume then that this piece of Blaupunkt kit that is available from VAG Parts for £69 will fit my standard GTI RCD 300 (When I get it early 06)? So I can just run it into the glove box and we are sorted for iPod?? Thanks Paddy
RedRobin
Doesn't it depend on the CD changer control being fitted?
Paddy_Driver
Red, I think you are right - back to the drawing board. I guess it depends on how you read the text in the Technical Details. Thanks Paddy
RedRobin
....Worth asking them (email?) though, Paddy. I could be wrong in my interpretation of their written details.
Simonl
Red's right. It will be a CDC subsitute.

scotw
Don't all the Head Units have the CD control anyway ? I've asked Vagparts to clarify and also if the kit comes with the cradle as per piccy so I can place the ipod in the armrest.
Simonl
[ QUOTE ] Don't all the Head Units have the CD control anyway ? [/ QUOTE ] Yes but i don't think you can have the ipod and CD changer together. one or the other me thinks! That doesn't include in dash CD changer BTW
scotw
Yeah that makes sense, one or the other. I also notice that this one seems superiour to the Dension one as it supports up to 999 playlists and 99 tracks with titles per playlist. If VAGPart confirm its the offcial VW kit methinks I'll go for it...
Paddy_Driver
Have a look at this page (Zipped PDF) from the Blaupunkt brochure - it looks like it will just connect to the CDC on the back of the head unit. I think the cradle is a separate order though. 598055-iPod_Prep.zip
RedRobin
Hmm....Probably old news but BMW are currently doing TV advertising down here which sings about it's iPod connectivity.
