pingpongpo
Hi guys, Looking at going snowboarding early next year for the first time. I've done all the lessons etc at Milton Keynes snodome so don't need anything like that but would like some tips on where is good to go? My priorities in order would be Quality of slopes for snowboarders, ease to get to, cost and then nightlife. Many thanks.
MattR32
Alpe d'Huez is good, cheap and very near to Grenoble airport. Loads of boarding there - My mates own a bar there and have been going for the last 12 years. Mind your butt though - I broke my ar5e bone (coccyx) on my first outing and it hurt like f3ck! Darkside
We are going to Bulgaria. My friend swears there is snow there. He has a villa so its a cheap holiday anyway so can't be bothered to check. Cheap booze, eastern european women. Sounds cracking!
Drinks
I too went to Alpe d'Huez for my fist snowboarding holiday a few years ago. It was really good. The nursery slopes are very near the town and not overly populated. The nightlife was ok, a fair few bars. Once you advance a bit the proper slopes are easily accesible and I don't remember too many button lifts (a nightmare for a novice snowboarder). In recent years also been to La Tania, fairly quiet but close enough to other venues not to matter ( particularly if you know a couple of the local bar staff ) This year went to Chamonix which was great but didn't sample much of the nightlife. Next year I'm off to Lapland which I know nothing about.
MattR32
Drinks - If you remember L'Underground bar in Alpe D'Huez, that's the one my mates own and run.
Drinks
Yeah, went there must have been 2002. Absolutely jampacked. Good night out though. Nothing like an early start out on the piste to clear your head.
neo283
I agree with the others - Alpe D'huez is great for the first timer. You can even board/ski into the heart of the town, although this is difficult for beginers! When I went, I stayed directly above L'underground - cool chilled out bar. Watched an England game there but was to bolloxed to remember what it was. Night life may well turn out not being a priority. Once you get into the boarding you'll be turning in early(ish) to get up and beat the masses to the gondolas. Well worth it for that first early morning run with no little kids on the slopes! Going to Courchavel (spelling?!) end of January. Heard good reviews and can't wait!
MattR32
Courcheval is a top resort - You'll love it!
pingpongpo
I have been looking at Bulgaria and I have to say the cost is well below anywhere else. It seems most of the hotels have been refurbished last year as well so I don't think this cheapness will last too much longer before the prices are bought into line with other resorts. Going to book it either this weekend or next.
pingpongpo
Ok, went to travel agents yesterday and booked the holiday for January. We are going to Passo Tonale in Italy, don't what its supposed to be like but its got a snowboard park etc so must be half decent. Travel agent reckons they have had a mad rush on bulgaria in the last two weeks and its driven the prices up
