RCUK
Hello all, been lurking here for a bit while i decided but im going to take the plunge this weekend and sell my integra type r to get a new gti. So far the only 3 things i know i want are 18" wheels, Candy white and cloth interior - going back to the old school (bar the huge rims!) Is there anything else i must add? So far the maybe's are the arm rest and CD changer (though not sure if this will work with an aftermarket unit?), parking sensors (for the wife), Lux pack 2 (as people in croydon cant drive properly). Prob go manual as i drove one and loved it, though im driving a DSG this weekend. A real shame to sell the ITR (def go try on if you havent!) but after 4 years ow ownership its time to move on... shark_90
Just make sure you spec a steering wheel and a bit of soundproofing and it'll already be better than the jap sack of you're coming from.. But to answer your question - no, the CD changer won't work with an aftermarket head unit unless it is the correct type, and the chances are it won't be. If you want a changer then fit an aftermarket one with your HU or go MP3. Also to note - just get the standard Gamma HU if you're going to swap it out, as the only difference with the Delta system is the HU itself.. the speakers etc are all still the same. Plus the Delta is double DIN which means you'll need cages and blanking plates made up for a aftermarket HU, when there really isn't any need. RCUK
cheers for that .. soundproofing you say? Ive heard of this concept before. Guess honda didnt go for that cos then you couldnt hear the engine sing as it hits 9000rpm. Cheers for the welcom though
shark_90
Only messing with you mate We all have a fairly relaxed attitude on TSN and the banter is plentiful, sounds like you'll fit in well!
RedRobin
Definitely armrest. I would have a good look at aftermarket audio options before deciding on that aspect. Highline computer. I gotta go out now....others will answer....catch ya later.
spankit
dsg 18s armrest esential imho
silentandy
As Shark and Robin say, if you are planning on going for an aftermaket stereo when you get the car don't bother with the CD changer. However if you don't spec that, do spec the centre armrest without changer as this transforms the look of the interior IMO. Also for £45 add on the highline computer. This is a bigger display and lets you change more settings on the car. All other options are down to your needs and budget, most people will probably suggest the above. The Lux pack 2 is good, but don't expect the mirrors to fold in all that much! Parking sensors are useful because rear visibility isn't that good on the Golf. Also consider adding on the 18inch Monza IIs as the price to add them on in comparison to buying them aftermarket is a relative bargain.
Simonl
the only essential item i would add is the 18"s, the rest is down to you really. After all, that's why they're called options!
scotw
I'm with Red, highline and Armrest. I'd also order the ipod prep and the reverse parking sensors. Welcome to TSN
RCUK
cool - thanks for the advice folks ... good to see i wasnt thinking too far off what you guys are. My biggest potentia issue is the sound system - might have to go pure aftermarket for the lot and save a few £££ on the CD changer.
RedRobin
If you check out the thread/s on my Pioneer gear you'll see that I got far better value for money than the factory option. Kenwood and Alpine are also good systems and doubtless there are others.
RCUK
Ive always run Alpine and have a pretty good audiophile setup at the moment. Reading about the sound issues is really scaring me - but im thinking about getting the base spec system with no disc changer and then spending the spare cash on a full a new alpine set up. Plus - who needs 6 discs when ive got a full 40Gb ipod id rather link up(even though sound quality wont be anywhere near CD quality)
RedRobin
...You'd be surprised about the iPod quality if you get a decent head unit. Mine even plays AAC files (as well as mp3).
RCUK
Been a while since i changed HU's - not needed to for about 5 years! I know alpine do an ipod connector though. BTW - would changing your HU affect the VW warranty in anyway?

Snoopy
A mate of mine after much looking at my standard GTI and driving it after lots of discussion after looking at many high speced versions to see what to go for and is it worth it went with. Monza II 18" Armrest (not including 6 disc) Xenons Highline computer Parking sensors Pearl paint. There was alot of discussion of the MFSW & winter pack and if he had wanted cruise he would have went for the MFSW as it includes cruise & highline comp in the price. Winter pack was decided against due to not been a huge asset. Lux pack 2 again apart from the puddle lights the mirrors fold in very little compared to normal so decided against it as he thought the idiots would just try pulling them off/out.. Leather again liked the look of the cloth and a few he had seen he said had seemed to have sagging already. sunroof he was not that bothered about it. ICE well we have something planned for that as we get it cheap.

chriswastle
Got to go with Leman on this only the 18s are a must, centre armrest does make the interior look a lot better though...
RedRobin
Armrest is actually very comfortable and useful, especially tootling along in traffic....Not just an aesthetic consideration.
RCUK
After reading this forum for most of today im reckoning the DSG box may well be added to my list. Great in traffic but more fun out of town. Def not going for the CD changer now, but just the plain old armrest insted. Not sure about the Lux pack 2 either now if the mirrors really dont fold in. Not sure how necessary dimming mirrors are - never had them in any car so far and never found it a real problem.
RedRobin
The mirrors do fold in but not a lot. But I could hardly get in and out of my currently rented garage without folding! Dimming and heated exterior mirrors are very useful in my experience.
Simonl
Lux pak 2 is good for a £100 IMO. Folding mirrors are ggod for posing, as are the puddle lights!!! Can't beat a bit of car park bling!
RCUK
Very true ... £100 to pose and spot my VW in the car park - cos the private plate and bright white paintwork prob just wont be enough
