slimtim
Do diesels blow from the oil filler cap if you take it off whilst at idle ? Ours (1.9 Tdi) has been losing coolant very slowly for ages until today, when it suddenly started to go through litres. Water is being sprayed about from somwhere but it isnt dropping if the engine is turned off. Whilst messing about and trying to see what was going on i took the oil filler cap off whilst it was running and theres loads of air coming out. Are they meant to do this ? Smiddy
radiator drain isnt open is it just kidding you would loose a fair bit of water if it was as soon as it started warming up. can you see any leaks at all anywhere?
danksy
Hi Slimtim Oil may blow out of the oil filler cap but that is about it!! Sounds to me as though you have a split hose, which when the water pump is running, and the system is pressurised (i.e the car is hot) forces water out into the engine bay. If it is losing as much water as you say it is it should be relatively easy to find the leak by observation Otherwise park it in a garage and see roughly where the water drips from, it may give you a clue. The split may have been caused by not enough anti-freeze which when the coolant has chilled (and expanded) has split the part. Good luck mate
slimtim
Cheers for the reply fellas. Is the top of the engine fairly under pressure on a TDi then ? No oil is coming out oif the oil filler cap, but lots of air. I have no experience of diesels, but i know if it was doing that with a petrol i'd be in trouble. My guess would also be water pump ? are these hard to change ? Its in the garage anyway so i guess its fingers crossed. Cheers Tim
