Colmartin Posted November 23, 2005 Report Share Posted November 23, 2005 I always make an effort to drive when it snows so I get experience as I live in the midlands and don’t really get any. I changed cars this summer to an A3 Quattro TDi and was wondering how the Quattro will differ in these conditions to my old front wheel drive Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi. I’m presuming I’ll have more traction and less sliding than the 306, but thought I’d ask for some general advice in advance of my Friday drive to Northern England. Plus, the Haldex "quattro" on the A3 is mainly front wheel drive, and transfers power to the rear when it's needed, so I'm not sure what it'll be like in comparison to proper Torsen quattro. Quattro will help you get going but won't do anything to help you stop, oh except for the extra weight that is. Just drive smoothly and with no sudden jerks to break traction if it is bad. I would keep ESP on unless you get into problems as it can help you miss a tree if you start skidding but its best not to try it out. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jimdiesel Posted November 24, 2005 Report Share Posted November 24, 2005 The weight factor is a major issue in driving in very slippery conditions. Quattro is a hinderence as often as it is a help. The best car I have driven recently in snow is my wifes A2 diesel. It has good traction (for a FWD car), but it steers and stops superbly due to its low weight. The old 306 was very light (sure it was made of tin foil!) and was fantastic in the snow, it always made me wonder why people had problems. Pidge Posted November 24, 2005 Report Share Posted November 24, 2005 If you do start sliding accelerate out of the slide. If you are going down a hill in the sticks stick very close to the verge on the side of the road - the point where the grass and the road merge will have the most grip, same applies for going up hill. I live out in the country and wouldn't be without quattro, 4 wheel drive gives twice the traction but no more stopping power, ime the extra traction more than makes up for the slight increase in weight and intelligent use of that will get you out of most tricky situations unless you are going far too fast in the first place.
