HELP !! What to do ?

happy new year to you all.

mollox, sorry the thread is driving you mad. im just an ordinary guy and this is the first time ive ever modded a car. I thought id done plenty of research into remapping and i thought id made every attempt to relay to qst what problems i had with the other tuners remap, im just on here trying to find other peoples opinions and yes there are a few tangents going on here but isnt that the point of these forums, that you can go into every detail not just the main problem. I never said they said "feck off, its not our map, go and speak to VW". what i said was they said "its not our remap, take the car to vw" I was advised on here that i should take my car to a large tuner who can sort out the problem for me and who will give me some comeback if all goes wrong. I thought this post would help people who are new to modding (like me)and show them that even when you take every care to get the job done right its not always that simple.

thanks petsy, i see the standard car is more like the amd standard car. the qst standard car is much lower bhp below 2800 rpm

No im not sure its a misfire, and i have tried it without the esp on and there is a sort of a pop noise even when theres been no change in gear.

One thing i noticed tonight is that now when accelerating slowly (gently) from a slow speed like turning into a road, i put the power gently on the throttle and nothing seems to happen, i increase the throttle a fraction and it drops down a gear and wheel spins. this is where the power in the low rpm range is missing. as everyone in dsg cars know, it stays in 2nd or 3rd when at quite low speeds ie very low rpm. But if there is no power at the low rpm then there is no acceleration and more throttle is needed. therefore it kicks down a gear. makes for a jerky drive in my opinion.

Mollox, sorry i couldnt find time to meet up with you over the festive period. i would really have liked you to drive my car and see if youd be happy with it as it is.

Yes i have taken in all you said re remapping problem. Maybe its not what i wanted to hear but its the truth all the same and thats what im after, the truth.

maybe if your not too busy we could meet (i can drive to you) and you could give me your opinion on my car. I would really value your opinion as you seem to really know what your talking about. Ive had sibrt's opinion and he agrees with me on the drivability of the car.

Yes this is another problem along with the misfiring and in a sense more of a problem than the misfiring. ie i could get qst to sort out the misfiring but id be left with a car i didnt enjoy driving.

Jay, I wouldn't read too much into plots from different cars on different days and different dyno's. The shape can be helpful to compare delivery but even this can be misleading due to the dyno being set up for different power levels and rev ranges.

The only way you can truly compare is to have the cars all present on the same day at the same dyno.

If you buy this months EVO there's a great article/test on petrol - and guess what car they use........... A MK5 GTi !!!

It's very interesting to note that the car in question made 205BHP / 234lbft on Shell '95 and 212BHP / 252lbft on BP Ultimate.

SuperChips quote 200lbft STD and only 233lbft Re-Mapped shocked.gif But I must say the curves look very nice and smooth...........

I wouldn't think it being an A3 would make ant difference at all - VAG quote the engine at 200ps (197BHP) in all applications except the A4 DTM and new S-Lines (220ps).

So don't go doing your head in looking at every plot you can find - It wont really help IMO.

understood avus. i really do know there will be differences depending on temp, fuel ect. what im trying to get at here is that the power delivery below 2800 rpm is quite different. the thing that decided me on going to qst for the remap was speaking to milltek who had there car remapped by them. they said that it was lovely and smooth and not much torque steer, as this is what i was looking for i went to qst. i did look at their before and after remap graphs and looking at them now they are quite different under 2800 rpm. they come out more like the amd before and after graphs. i have added the milltek onto the plots for you to see.

What are your opinions on the differences?

could someone be so kind as to insert them for me plz.

Well, after this mammoth saga, and after seeing the plot curves, i would (if i owned a mk5 gti) certainly go to AmD for my re-map. The power below 2500rpm is quite frankly staggering. There is 80hp from 1800rpm, 100hp from 2000rpm and an incredible 140hp at 2400rpm. Now that is what i call low down power and driveability and serves to reinforce exactly what scotty has been preaching to us all regarding the posting of power plots. They really do make sense, and PLEEEASE, admin create a sticky with different tuners plot curves. And from already tuned end-users cars and not direct from tuning companies. This could have the potential to be abused i know, but i'm sure the truth will out!

I agree 100% with dansky. Do exactly as he suggests (hell, even AmD emphasise the importance of having the most recent VW updates applied before any re-map), that surely shows that they not only care, but are well up to date with regard to re-mapping (and obviously not wanting unhappy customers back on their doorstep).

There is however a pattern starting to emerge here. And your car is the common denominator. Had car re-mapped, car starts mis-firing, return to standard, car runs just fine; had car re-mapped by someone else, car starts mis-firing, once again needs to be returned to standard. As AmD are aware of your previous woes, you may well have to sign some kind of disclaimer before they re-map your car for their protection, assuming they even agree to it. If after that re-map the car still has problems, then at that point, i'd do exactly as dansky did with a problem car and that was to replace the car as a last resort.

Follow this advice and i'm sure you will be ok, but all this is assuming you can just get the car back to standard. Good luck, and Happy new year! 169144-ok.gif

ive put together a graph (if someone could insert it into page) of qst, milltek, AMD bhp plots with the stadard plots by them for comparison. hope you all find this interesting.

If you look the standard plots for milltek (i believe there car was remapped by qst) and amd they are pretty close both pre and post tuning. The graphs qst gave me as shown on the plot are way below in bhp under 2800 rpm for both the standard car and the remapped car. This is not how my car felt to drive before they remapped it, but now it is (no real power under 2600 rpm and when you accelerate slightly theres no real acceleration then with a bit more accelerator the car kicks down and the wheels spin. not a nice drive)
